Front brakes - Need brake job help - 1990 w250

Front brakes, Dana 60

Ok you know how it is. The rubber flex line from the body to the axle was rubbing the steel brake line and wore a hole in it. So, I'm taking this opportunity to replace my brake lines & do a brake job too. I need to get the rotors off to see if I can either get them cut or get new ones. I have the 1990 service manual but it sux! Rotor removal is not clearly explained for the dana 60 dammit.

Does anyone know of a do it yourself brake job thread for 1st gen dana 60's?

Additionally, best place to get parts? I need calipers & maybe rotors if mine can't be cut. I checked at NAPA, but everything they have there is cheap Chinese imported crap.

Or, any guru's nearby in Central NJ help me?

The first gen dana 60 is almost exactly like a chevy dana 60 .I'm sure you could find something by googleing "dana 60 front brakes".

There is a spring wedge to drive out to remove the caliper,you need to remove the locking hubs,the spindle nuts and rotor/hub assembly. remove grease seal and bearings...

I cannot describe everything from memory but can probably answer questions. You will need the tool to get the bearing lock nut off I believe this one is correct http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000K1 ... EMWPNMJ9N3. This is not the one I used. I went to Napa and picked one up but it was quite a bit more expensive. I believe you can also do a loaner tool program from Advance or Autozone to get the tool.

Mind if I ask what the napa part number is for that tool?

Also, I'm considering new rotors. Is the rotor pressed onto the hub stud assembly? Or is it a "floating" type rotor simply held on when you tighten the lugnuts?

Napa Part Number for Spindle Lock Nut Socket is SER 3246. The hub and rotor are 1 large piece.

Thanks doug, that was the info I was looking for. I'm gonna bring it to a local machinist. Still contemplating new rotors.

Air hammer with a punch makes quick work to R&R the wheel studs/rotor.

How bad are your rotors? You can usually re use them, unless there is a really big lip on the outside edge.

Well they both have that typical huge rust ring on the out an inner surface of the rotor face, so only the center of the pad was contacting. Although there is probably enough meat left for one cut, I decided to go with the slotted / dimpled rotors from http://brakeperformance.com/ looks like good quality made in usa and zinc coated for rust inhibition, which is good because I hate it when rotor cooling slots rust.

Just ordered them, should be here in a week or so. I'll post my opinion of them once they arrive. I have to get new calipers too, one of them has a stuck piston & bleeder screw broke off.

Dammit. finally got some nice weather, went out to take my hubs/rotors off, and wouldnt you know it, my axle has a big hexagonal outer locknut. NAPA tool # 3246 will NOT work on this.

SO i researched a little and it looks like some dana 60's have a hexagonal locknut. (Did anyone know that?) Found the dodge part# in my dodge service manual. Miller special tools has it: Part# DD-1241-JD http://millerspecialtools.spx.com/Detail.aspx?id=1208

Anyone know if NAPA carries this?

i did my brake job just before winter and iirc there should be a grove on the top threads of the spindle shaft with a slider piece pushed into the lock ring, remove the slider, and put your d60 socket on the nut to spin it loose. if you cant find the socket, you can always use a hammer and chisel and notch a groove in the nut to spin it off, i dont do this unless im in a bind at 2am, hence why the socket is in my glovebox. most solid axles with part time hubs have a lock nut requiring a similar socket. measure the nut size and call around , i think mine is a procore socket.

You`ll prolly like those rotors, I have a set on my truck, about 10k on em so far and they still stop nice n smooth, no vibrations or rust.

Still waiting on calipers & my axle nut tool.

I ordered the calipers from http://brakeperformance.com/ & decided to pay the extra $25 for powder coating. They offer a $50 credit for the cores, so I thought what the hell. I don't know how much it's going to be to ship the cores back to them but I doubt it's going to exceed $50
