14 bolt

Postby rmauto1 » Sat Jan 02, 2010 8:35 pm

So I have decided to quit screwing around with the dana 70 in my 93 and install a 14 bolt. I found a good one, with the right rear ratio. I think I'm gonna stuff it in there. The spring perches are a little different, and the parking brake cable ends are a little different. The only other big difference that I can find, is that it is an inch narrower at the wheel mounting surface. An inch wider would make me nervous.(it might make the turing circle wider) I can weld the spring perches to the right width, same with the parking brake cable levers, and backing plate's. The brakes are the same width and diameter. The only other problem that I can see is the yoke. It is either a new yoke or conversion joint away, from working. I really like the three pinion bearings and, the fact that there is an easy adjustment on the back lash on the ring and pinion, but it will never need it. My truck has stock pump settings, and I do not beat it. It will however, pull heavy from time to time, but not often. Does anyone have any experience on this swap? Will it hold up? Sure seems like it will. I have never had any problems with any full floater 14 bolt rear, in chevys. It doesn't seem like the cummins will break it, unless I abuse the snot out of it. 1st gen god's, gimmie some feedback please!!!

I almost forgot about a huge part of this swap: The rwal. If I do this swap I will do away with rear hydraulic pulse valve, and all electrical aspects of the abs.

IMO, if originality isn't a concern, the 14 bolt GM rear end is really one of the best rear ends out there for the money.

There is a chance the rear yoke from the 70 will work on the 14 bolt.
I'd sure try it.

Mark.

They have a small pinion shaft and splines, I think the same size as a 12 bolt. Th full floater only has 30 spline axles. In a bbc powered mud truck they like to break. They are not as strong as a d70 but they sure are cheaper.

What have you been smokin ford69  Thats the first time I have ever heard anyone say a 70 was tougher than a 14b

In the first pic the top pinion is a 14b and the bottom is an HO72. The 14b pinion is the same size as a D80

I guess I need to lay of the throttle some then. I have broke axles carriers spider gears. Never broke a pinion though just everything else

That was an interesting discussion on the comp board till the 9" ford is better crap got interjected.
93 w250 6 speed 4" exhaust, caution, work truck, she's no beauty. building 1 ton dually 4x4, dana 80, 48rh, 205 Scratch the one ton, bought frt. dually 4x4 98 12 valve with the tiny rear doors. rides so much better than the 93.

Thanks for all the input guys. My next question is, has anyone heard of, or know ow anyone that makes custom parking brake cables? I got the 14 bolt into the shop the other day and took some good measurements of the 14 bolt and the d70. they are really close in size. The 14 bolt from a 76 chevy is one inch narrower from hub face to hub face. The spring perches are also one inch narrower on the tubes, in my mind this is a very feasible swap. this only leaves the parking brake cables as an issue (my truck is a 5-speed). I was thinking of either using a micro lock valve and eliminateing the cables all together. Or cutting the backing plates and arms off the d70, and welding them to the chevy plates and arms, to use the dodge cables. Any thoughts?
