All 1st Gen diesels had 30 gallon tanks. 2nd Gen's went to 35 gallon tanks I believe.

That's due to the very highly accurate and reliable sending units found in these trucks.

Empty it, try it again, and I guarantee it will take 30 gallons. 8)

Don't try to drive to the filling station after you empty it! :P

I think there are at least two date stamps on the tank. The number in the middle is the number of US gallons capacity.

It may have been replaced with a smaller gasser tank.

I know when my low fuel light comes on and stays on, it takes 24 gallons to fill up. I've driven a few days with my low fuel light on, and when I filled her up, it took 28 gallons. I'd rather have my low fuel light come on with 6 gallons left, rather than 2, it's easier on the wallet.

Yes, the fuel gauges tend to be very pessimistic, which like Peo says is probably a good thing if only from the standpoint of making it more difficult to actually run out of fuel. My low fuel light comes on with over ten gallons left. I know this because I drove it another 20 miles and still siphoned out 10 gallons before dropping the tank once a couple years ago.

The build sheet I got from chrysler says that I have a 24gal fuel tank. Never filled it up past 22 gallons either.

I have a 89 factory service manual and it says 30 gallon was the standard tank for a diesel truck. They do list a 24 gallon for the V8 and V6. I have my window sticker somewhere and I think I remember it saying 24 gallon tank on the standard equipment side then on the option side it listed the 30 gallon tank as part of the diesel option. Not saying you don't have a 24 , just passin along my 2 cents. :D

I see, now that would make sense. I'll have to take a look at the stamp on the tank now.
