S300 turbo

Postby 90FIRSTGEN CUMMINS » Sun Apr 12, 2009 4:34 pm

What version of this turbo should I be looking for if down the road I might go with compound turbos. Also where is the best place to order one of these new. I have been on many different sites that sell these but im sure you guys know beter than I do. Besides its tough for us first gen owners to find stuff as it is so if we can help each other save money what the heck. Thanks

I would suggest a 62/65/14 from pdr. never heard bad things bout them.

both turbos suggested are good. it all really comes down to what you want. the 62/65 will light a little quicker than the 62/71. for the 62/65 i think pdr has the best price as far as i have found, for the 62/71 i would check out new era diesel, chuck has the 62/71 for cheaper than anywhere i have found. but i could be wrong.

Since you have an automatic trans, you could also get away with buying an HX40 which you could pick up for pretty cheap and flows about the same s a base model (57mm) S300. just a thought.

What difference does having an automatic make?

I'm not being smart, I'm genuinley curious.

I've been running my Super 40 for over a year now, and its pushing 35 psi, and I've not been able to bark it yet, on my 5 spd truck.

I have a crappo h1c with the 60 gds upgrade pushing 42 psi and I have not been able to bark that either. My 89 auto with the S300 I can bark it. I am sure if you took care of a 40 and did not way over boost it it will be fine for a long time. Just like anything, abuse it and it will break.

Thats what I figured the answer to be, but I think the HX40 gets a bad rap, due to over exaggeration on the internet.

I talked to Brian about it, and he said for under 400rwhp they are a great turbo. It is the guys with 500+rwhp that are running the hell out of 'em that are destroying them, and giving them a bad reputation.

I hate my automatic.

What is the difference between an hx40 and an hx40w? Is the hx40w good to install on a 1st gen?

As far as I know, the W just means wastegated. I haven't heard of a non W/G HX40 though.

Thanks Parker. I thought that might be the case. One more thing. What would be a good price for a new one?

I can get new Super 40's for $869+ frt. These are the much improved wheels vs the common hx40 found on the 8.3L. They also have the t-3 foot to bolt to the manifold and the wastegate oriented the right way to fit good.
