where to buy a turbo...

Postby ahale2772 » Fri Feb 04, 2011 11:22 am

So if I wanted a nice turbo at a nice price where would I go? I don't want to pay 1800 bucks for some warmed over piece from industrial injection or HTT. Not that they are bad turbos but I just can't afford that. I've tried looking on turbosupply.net but I have no clue how to find the turbo im looking for because they only go by part numbers. (Looking for a s300 64/71/14) Can I even get a turbo that specific from a place that sells basic stock turbos?

Thanks

well, bell turbo (he's been mentioned in diesel power a couple times) is whom i would go to, but that because he's close. i forgot that you're on the other side of the country lol. go talk talk to some diesel shops in the area. they should be able to point ya in the right direction at least

or what about just going cheap with an hx/hy 35? lot a bang for the buck there

Im going to add another turbo eventually so I wana buy once, just seems like most people sell the same turbos for the same price my budget for both turbos is under what most places are asking for one

No you can't in stock form. If you did find a 64/71 in stock form it probly wouldn't have a vband style compressor cover and certainly would have a useless large T4 turbine housing. The turbo guys are using stock Borg Warner parts, but are building them to certain specs. Ie, take a s300 shaft with the 71 turbine wheel and add a compressor wheel of choice say 62, 64, or 66. Then machine a stock T3 turbine housing of choice, .60, .70, .80 to fit the larger 71 turbine wheel. Then add an aftermarket or stock vband style compressor cover. I have found the best price at TDI (Turbo Diesel & Injection) in Indianapolis, Indiana. A friend of mine is building them. Call and ask for Mark Burris. He is the only one there you want to talk to. 1-800-232-2834. I have one on my twin truck. If you wait for a large diesel show, such as the TS event in Bowling Green in May, you can get the show price they have at the event.

Yup, turbo supply only has stock stuff. They have the S300G ( 174430 ) and the super HX40 ( 4031450 ).

I have called a couple of times and have had my questions answered. Some places don't want to take time but they were more then happy to take my call. I will buy one from them I think. I want to update my H1C 60 with another baby S300G. I would like the bigger 62/65/14 or a 62/71/14 but then it gets over what I want to spend. I have the baby 300 on my 89. It won't cool 425 horses like it says, but is a nice turbo for the street with a better shaft set up then the holsets.

yeah clearly the bigger s300's bring big dough, just talked to Jacob at Diesel auto power, he reccomended a 63/68/14 which sounds like a swell idea to me, also he is getting in a batch of 5x.018's with the correct 155* spray angle..... I will be calling him back :D

I got my stuff at Turbosupply.net. If you look through borg warner's catalog (google airwerks), you can find the part numbers. If you wanted to run an external gate, you can get the stock s300's for fairly cheap. I just don't know if you can get the correct AR ratio to spool the t4 housing. Fitting a down pipe would suck also. Just get an s300g and an s475 and build twins. Also sorry for no links, using my phone.

The s300g is a 57/65/14 gated set at 30 psi with the correct foot. The part number is 174430. As far as I can tell it is an exact match to BD's Super B except BD puts on an adjustable gate where as the stock 300 does not. BD may do internal mods as well, not sure.

Richie I meant the bigger stock s300's. You can get non gated 64/71 turbos stock, I just cant remember the exhaust AR ratios. My setup spools real well IMHO. Max egt so far of 1250*, but the exhaust side of my head is ported and my exhaust manifold is also ported. I put a turbuckle on my wastegate actuator so mine is now adjustable...got it from BD for about $60. I have it set at 25 psi right now but haven't had time for tuning.

I can hit 1400 with my 89 with 3/16'ths advance timing right at 300 horses. ( well 3hp under 300 ) Thats at 34 psi with the gate unhooked. Powerstroke cooler, tube style cooler pipes, 4 inch exhaust.

I don't know overall boost, but mine will peg my 60 psi gauge fairly quickly. I'll be getting a 100 psi gauge sometime soon. The s300g would be smokin hot by itself, but the S475 really helps keep it all cool. If I end up needing more air I could always put it on my 1 ton and get a 62mm secondary if money allows. For less than $1500 shipped, I'm happy with the combo so far...

Well, I was wrong again...
Found a 61/71/1.15, some say its 62/71/1.15. Part # 169417. A 63/68/.88 part # 177283. Problem is I think they're T4's. I know they're bigger than T3. Probably better paying more to start with than trying to make one of them work.
