None of my 1gens have ever consitently managed an accurate 20mpg regardless of configuration and tuning. I am depressed at my mileage inadequacy. Even with my 3.31's and 32"tall tires on old yellow I couldn't pull that off. If I could get even 24mpg consistent I would park my 26mpg mercedes in a heart beat! Sadly I don't think that is going to realisticly happen.

Hey KTA, have you tried driving slow? I got 30.9mpg with my dually driving 55-60mph with all the tires at 80psi, and the grille blocked off.

I tried driving 55 and slower once and with 30% in town driving managed 19.5mpg. I do know at interstae speeds I can do 1-2mpg better in Indiana since it is flat, so I could see getting 22mpg or so there by driving easy, but since I don't live there and I don't have time to drive 55 and don't like getting rear ended when I do, I think I will have to stick to what I have. I am really hopeing to be able to tweak my crew cab to consistently turn in 20+mpg reluts. It will be a fuel mileage build, not a power build. If I can do that I will be ecstatic!

I put a 518 overdrive with a new georend converter in my 89 with 3.07 gears. I haven't clocked the mileage but on a 245 mile trip I used a little less then a 1/4 of a tank and I was running between 75 and 80 mph and the roads were not flat by anymeans. I would definatly put the 3.07's in
05 GMC Sierra Z71 6.5" lift and 35's
95 VW Golf VR6 5 spd

Gone but not forgoton :(

My truck is a Suncoast A-518, Goerend converter, 3.07 rear end and 2wd; I can go 400 miles between fill-ups when I'm averaging 85-90 MPH; so about 13 MPG. It's better than what I get with my 2001 V-6 5-speed 4x4 Toyota Tacoma, and I think it's about the same as I got with my 2003 4-cylinder automatic 2x4 Nissan Frontier (piece of crap). At lower speeds and around town it gets significantly better mileage than the Toyota.

I think I should get a car for the desert commutes.

A guy on TDR put a big bumper on his 2nd gen, and lost about 1-1.5 mpg, he said. So after some thinking and drinking, he built a spoiler for under the bumper to push air around instead of under the truck. He gained 1-2 more than before. He said the turbulence under the truck knocks the mileage down bad.
Figured I'd throw that out there, might be worth looking into. It sure can't hurt the "brick" any.
