Bouncing Speedo

Postby peobryant » Fri Jul 20, 2012 11:38 am

As I was on the way back from my Grandfather's Farm, about half way through the trip I noticed my speedo was bouncing around after I had driven over a pretty tough part of the interstate. It is very intermittent though and sometimes the speedo will work fine for miles, but other times it just bounces around.

I'm thinking it's the VSS that was jumbled through the rough patch causing my speedo to bounce around, sound right?

The VSS can wallow out a little over time and get loose. You probably could use a new one if its original. Replacing mine made the bouncing go away but I still have a shaky start until about 10-15mph which was there with the original VSS.

Tighten up on the gear reducer that the vss is screwed to. They get a little loose and makes a bad connection hence the bouncing. Mine does it every few months.

I haven't driven my truck since I posted this (it's nice having a little Subaru) but I'll be driving it tomorrow so I'll mess with the VSS before I leave. I'm sure it needs a new one anyways because over a year ago I would get intermittent speedo issues where it wouldn't work for over a week and then it would again so I'm sure the VSS is the culprit. Or at least part of the problem.
