supply q's

Postby ellis93 » Fri Aug 31, 2012 11:15 am

Since I'm fixin to drop a grand on a new IP and work on my injectors I figure its time to upgrade my fuel supply to them. Ive bought a hplp from a member here and I was thinking of using it with the stock fuel line for the time being. Id love to run a buy an airdog system but sadly that's not in the cards for me.

I don't have the spacer required to install the hplp to the block, any one know where to get it or might would have one they'd like to sale?

What's the best regulator to use with it?

Should I use a boost reference regulator, which one works best?

How have y'all rigged yours up,pics would be awesome ;)

I want to do this once so thats the reason I'm asking. Later I'm going to do away with the factory feed lines. Thanks guys

I gave about $20 for the spacer at a bosch shop

Yeah, it's the same spacer as the LPLP's use, it's # should be floating around in the sticky.

My creation is decently well-documented in my thread. If there's anything specific you want to know about it just ask. It definitely puts out an absolute huh? more fuel than my factory setup did.

Specifics? Not really just a general idea of what would be a rock solid setup, not some crap cobbled together that'll last long enough to get me stranded somewhere they pump sunshine to

Oh, maybe you shouldn't look at my setup then.

If you still want to it's somewhere between pages 10 and 65.

You can't miss it.

Mallory 4307M is a boost/vac referenced regulator that works from 4-25psi. $107 and change at Summit Racing.

I loved it. Really easy to setup, compact, BIG ports (inlet is -8 AN, 1/2". Outlets are -6 AN, 3/8", return is 1/2"), in our safer pressure ranges, and doesn't cost an arm/leg/firstborn. You don't have to use the reference line either.

Hope that helps.

Taco...I'll dig threw it
Jon,thanks. On the return, how'd you fix up the return on it? I'd assume its just T'd in the stock line?

FWIW, I had a funky issue with my mess when I ran the HPLP with a nice Aeromotive bypass-type regulator.

Apparently, when revving the engine really high (as in getting on it), I found what appeared to be the regulator leaking fuel from it's main-case O-ring. It wouldn't leak with normal driving.

I came to the conclusion that when coming from full load to low throttle (getting off the fuel. Not side-stepping, but close), the HPLP's output was being dumped back into the return line (as it should) and with it being the OEM dinky tube, there was a pressure spike. Such had the regulator burping fuel.

Not cool.

Digging around and reading instruction manuals, it's apparently good design practice to have the return line larger than the supply.

With that, I run a 3/8" (ID) supply and a 1/2" return.

No more squirts. :)

Why not run the return from the regulator teed back into the inlet of the lift pump instead of creating back pressure on the return line?

I was digging thru some old Chevy hot rod junk I still have hanging around and found one of these
Image
How would one of these work with no return? Reckon the hplp would handle being dead headed?

By design it is dead-headed... I would think it should work.

With an electric, I read that the biggest thing for longevity and reliability is having a return line to keep fuel moving through it to keep it cool.

My experience with them is that they cause pressure surges. Rather than bypassing the unused pressure it builds up and eventually leaks by. They work well if you have a constant flow, but that doesn't happen in an engine that constantly changes RPM.
