BC.....is there some kind of regulator to the vane pump or is it where it makes what ever it make at a given rpm to advance the timing.
I keep reverting to gas thoughts on this, with the popping and snapping at about 1900 RPMs,on a gas motor I'd have said its high or low timing. Withe the doggy idle id say that the timings low. The smoke is the only thing that makes me wonder hard about the pressures being produced by that pump. If the pressure isn't there to atomize the fuel and it dribbles out then it'll puddle in the pistons......right? Causin it to act "flooded" untill I clear it out, hence the super mushroom clouds it now produces.
I'm pondering tearing into it,just to peek inside to see how it works. Hell I've been inside for the spring and that wasn't to bad of a chore. Reckon there's something inside that'll get me in trouble?

Yes . ... . it works with the overflow-valve to maintain a given case pressure at a given pump speed.

Enjoy ... .

I would pull the injectors and have them checked before i pulled the pump apart. Could have sticking injectors just dumping fuel from the crap that was ran threw them.

For this reason, I won't pump fuel directly into my trucks from the station anymore. I add my "brew" and fill a 75 gallon tank. Then gets transferred into the trucks via a filtration system. The bottom of the transfer tank has a sediment layer in the bottom from what settles out of the fuel, mostly this fine glacial silt we have here. Wasn't much different in Arizona with all the dust there.

Got another set of injectors you can throw in it to see if it will run with the clean fuel? The pump is probably ok but the injectors will be all stuck up. A worn out pump won't make enough fuel pressure to pop the injectors so it just won't start and run with a bad pump before it would "flood out".

I've wished a thousand times I'd have kept my stock injectors, for testing purposes anyhow. With the look of that stuff in the buckets you all wouldn't think it wise to just go thru all the fuel system huh? Then I may just try the injectors first then. Reckon jkidd would warranty them

I have a stock set you can use to diagnose with if you need them.
