Fuel shut off soelinoid

Postby cummins32 » Mon Oct 01, 2012 8:47 pm

Well, I went to shut my truck off and the key wouldn't kill it, so I popped the hood and grabbed the manual kill and it wouldn't do anything, so I turned my key back to on and tried it again and it dropped the idle, but wouldn't kill it so I blocked the air to the turbo to kill it. Well on the way home, if I gave it any more than half throttle, it would start missing, and pour out white smoke and I lost all power to my cab, my radio quit working, and none of my gauges in my cluster would work. So, My pump is shot correct ?

No.

It sounds like multiple issues, not related to one another, are showing their heads at the same time.

what do you think it is ? I'm just thinking the pump is junk because the manual kill won't shut it off and the fuel shutoff is junk and lodged in the pump somewhere

Has the manual shutoff worked before? It might need re indexed. It's got splines one it just like the throttle shaft.

Yeah, it sounds like you chipped your tip, then possibly knocked off your FSS wire while you we're checking things out and it shorted on something.

Fatty's on the right track with the manual lever, has your pump been apart before?

What would cause it to start missing and smoking white, and the pump top was off once when I installed a 3200 spring

The FSS tip, and these injection systems are simple compared to newer stuff, but still need things to be right. It could be something like a piece of rubber stuck somewhere not letting fuel through at the right time, so it retards that injection event causing white smoke and/or a miss. It's not a guarantee, but it is a possibility. I'd pull your FSS and see how bad the tip is chewed up.

Regardless, I don't think you trashed your pump.

And the missing and white smoke can be from the power loss. Just because the tip of the plunger is chipped, if there is no power to the solenoid, it will still restrict fuel enough to cause it to run bad.

Well, I got the solenoid out and the tip was chewed up, so I pulled the rubber off and the spring, so tomorrow I'm gonna put it back together and hope for the best, I drained the fuel out of the pump also to try and get the crud out, so I'll need to fill that back up correct ?

Well, I put it back together tonight, and I tried firing it up and it just cranks, so I cracked open one of the injector lines and it's barely putting out any fuel ? could the pump be bad ?, My indexing might be off also though, so I think I need to tear it back apart and try and change it.

My truck had the same problem except that it ran fine and the idle never dropped after i turned the key off... I ordered a new solenoid from ebay for a VW application it was like 12 dollars. Worked mint. Such a pain to get out though I had to use a chisel to make a notch in the old one and spin it out, and the new one went in the same way haha.

Also my shutoff lever wouldnt kill the engine either. They were right - it just needs to be adjusted. Actually I think there might have been a stop that it was hitting and I adjusted that or moved it I cant remember. But it worked fine untill I turned up the power screw, then it wouldnt kill the engine any more.

Cummins 32, leave the plunger and spring out of the solenoid then try starting it. If it runs the solenoid is bad. Most guys cut the top of the bracket off that's on the head of the pump for better access to the solenoid.
