New Fan Install

Postby nolafishr » Tue Oct 23, 2012 2:40 am

I have a new fan to install, I have the fan hub off the front of the engine now because of other work I am getting done also, I would like to know what is the easiest/best way to change out the fan. I found out after fooling with it that it is not the easiest. I looked in the links here but did not see a write up on this, does anyone have suggestions?

It's easiest to do with the fan assembly, hub and all, on the engine.
My PREFERRED method is NOT the safest, a hammer and a very long chisel, or punch, off one flute of the nut and 2 or 3 quick raps in a CLOCKWISE direction usually free it up.
The proper tool "works" okay, if it's not rusty or seized on.

With the fan assembly off and IF you can find one, the old chain-style Vice Grip oil filter wrench clamped around the pulley works marvelously well, with a generic wrench to turn the nut.

PATIENCE, because those blades will slice without mercy.

A nice air hammer works good for knocking them loose.

You have AIR TOOLS?
I'm jealous, my version of "high tech" is a DeWalt electric impact.
