Camplate R&D

Postby bgilbert » Sun Dec 09, 2007 6:06 pm

Well now that I've gone through a VE pump (well mostly) and plan to go through a couple more in the near future, does one camplate shine over another (stock Bosch)? Would one from a higher HP VE be any better than one from one of our 1st gen VE's?

I do know that according to part numbers, between the 103, 114, and 205 pumps, they each have a different part number for it's camplate. Whether or not it's just Bosch superceding part numbers or they have different lifts, durations etc that's where the R&D or one's (KTA) experience with pump internals/builds etc comes in.

I could just be wasting time since Bosch pump parts are high dollar and of course you'd need a part number just to get started. If I could just come across a VE pump in the junkyard off a piece of equipment or anything of higher HP than the lil 160hp Dodge/Cummins, then I could tear into it and maybe learn something. Thoughts, ideas?

I habe been workin on the same thing but my calipers died so i have not been able to get the plates that i have measured. The company i have been dealin with has them available in 3.2 3.4 and 4mm lifts they have not sent me any duration specs yet but they are supposed to. I think there would be more available fuel with larger lift and duration just the same as the cam in a 7100 does. The place i have been dealin with said they would build me a cam plate if i sent them drawings of what i wanted and the price would be reasonable.

I am pretty shure the stock pump is 2.5mm lift best I remember, so a 4mm plate would increase fuel by a lot, but I am not shure how well it would tolerate rpm's afterwards. Do they have a 4mm lift 6cyl cam or just a 4cyl? From what I have measured all the Dodge camplates have the same profiles, the reason for the diffrent part numbers is diffrent timeings which are controlled by the position of the dowl pin in the camplate.

Could we possibly get a 4mm lift, then have a shorter duration, putting out higher pressure, while still getting more fuel there than a stock plate would? Kind of allow one to run not so big sticks, while still making big HP? Not quite the pressure of a p7100, but more than stock. Would the rest of the VE handle it at 3500rpm, adequate fuel supply assumed?

I cant believe the lift on the stock cam plate is only 2.5mm- it looked like more on te cam plate I had out of my 90. The different dowel positions for timing are interesting.

ford, FYI I have access to a machine shop. We can make camplates. We have made our own to put in things like end mill sharpeners to make special tool radi. Lemme know if you need some help.

i think part of the key to keeping a 14mm ve alive besides fuel supple is being able to get rid of the fuel i.e large sticks beside heat it is to much pressure that kill the internals

The one from my core VE appeared to be about 3.2mm.

It's from a post-91.5 VE; I forget what the number is...
