cam gear ?

Postby dragrdan » Thu Nov 22, 2012 5:06 am

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE

Discovered that the front seal is leaking on my newly rebuilt IP. Decided that I would pull the timing cover to get at it, and check a few other things while in there. Found the cam gear is rubbing the timing cover. How far on should the gear be? Flush with the cam snout, or?? Is there a way to reseat the gear without removing the cam? What is the endplay supposed to be? Can it be checked with the valvetrain installed? Is the endplay adjustable, and how is it set?

Thanks,
Dan

The leaking pump will cause your miss...... the cam should be pressed on below flush around an eight of an inch and you must remove cam to press gear on. And if the gear worked off you should tig weld it on

Cam snout should be 1/8 sticking out of gear? or recessed in gear?

NVM, felt behind the gear, and can feel the step the gear should probably be close to or up against. Looks like the gear is coming off

Any thoughts on drilling and tapping the cam, then using a bolt and washer to pull it back on?

Short answer?
It's forward for a reason, either it worked loose, or it wasn't installed correctly.
Pull the cam, press the gear on (if it meets press specs), otherwise get a new gear and/or cam if the gear is loose.
Never weld on internal engine components.
All else is wishful thinking.

Mark.
