trucks running hotter than normal

Postby blackvmax07 » Tue Nov 27, 2012 6:49 am

well the other day my battery fell into my fan shroud and demolished it, ever since my truck has been running at the 3/4 quarter mark on the engine temp, where should the needle be while driving or towing? Cant seem to find a new shroud anywhere, can someone direct me somewhere? Thanks

Did it rip any of your grounds off when it fell over?

The ground wires running from your batter to the fender and core support are important for your gauges to work properly. NOT SAYING THAT IS WHAT IT IS, but it can throw the ohms off. These gauges run off ohms, so if there is poor grounds the gauges can fluctuate and read innacurate.

Just something to check.

If the gauge is jumping around, then yes, that is what it would be.

I would be more inclined to think without the shroud you aren't pulling enough air thru the radiator. The shroud causes the fan to pull thru the whole thing, and without it the fan only pulls thru the middle. The ground wire is very important, but that isn't the whole issue.

I"ve never ran a shroud on any 1st gen I've owned... never have had any issue.

I'm basing my thought on 2 things, only 1 gauge is screwing up, and only the shroud is missing. I have heard of other guys running without shrouds also, but who knows what shape the radiator is in. If the fins are getting bad it won't cool as effectively, so more air is better.

By all means, fix the wire 1st, that's easy, then see how it is. I would do the same thing. Especially since I've seen how scarce and expensive shrouds are! ;)
