Explain to me how the cold water trick would work on a worn camplate problem. What am I not understanding.

It wouldn't.
However, it would on a worn head and rotor, not that I encourage cooling one off while it's running.

Ok, thought I was losing it there for a second.

Also just called 2 shops and both immediately asked, why? After some conversation, they both told me that it is extremely rare for the vane pump to go bad and when it does, it will rarely affect idle. The most common thing to affect idle, and hard starting (when hot) is a worn h/r assembly, a worn camplate, or broken return springs. The way to tell if it is the h/r is spray cool water on the pump and see if idle picks up.

Misread it I guess. Maybe I'll try the cool water thing to see if it is the head & rotor. I mean, the pump is pretty much shot so spraying cold water is not much of a concern for me. As long as it lives for another week I'll be fine. Until then, guess I'll be doing a pump for it...

I'd try luke warm water... it can always be rebuilt unless you crack the housing. With the missing and everything, I would assume it has a broken return spring

i send in my pump from my 93 and they called back a few days later and said the head and rotor was bad. Prob from someone down the line taking it apart and not putting it together right.... talked to alot of guys from different shops about head and rotors... cheapest is about 430, most expensive was about 850 JUST FOR THE H/R!! but most techs said they dont really wear out.. i dont know if thats true or not, but a reman shop will- never- replace a head and rotor with an exchanged/remanufactured pump. So unless you buy a brand new pump it will have an old head and rotor with who knows how many miles on it.

so make sure ya know what your doin if you decide to take it apart!
