Low boost 9psi maxed out

Postby BREEZE1 » Wed Dec 19, 2012 3:25 pm

I just picked up a w250 91.5 cummins automatic last week. I noticed that it only gets up to 9psi. I seen one silicone boot that looked bad so I took it off and it had oil on the inside. The boot looked good once i got it off. Shouldn't these trucks get around 20 psi? Is there a rebuild kit for my turbo, or should i just buy a hx35?

Check for boost leaks first, visual inspection of the couplers, clamps, and hoses. Pull your filter tube off and see if your turbo has any horrible play in it, or if the blades are chewed up or hitting the housing. How old is the filter, does the truck smoke or anything on acceleration? Your filter may just be that plugged up with crap.

If you've got the time and know how a simple leak tester can be made from a pressure regulator an PVC pipe, then you just coat everything with soapy water. That.s the fastest and easiest way to see what's leaking.

Well he probably does have the 21cm exhaust housing. Super laggy.

Like Taco said, check for boost leaks and turbo play. You shouldn't have oil in your charged tubes.

Yep, you have "The Lagmaster" for a turbo.

There should be NO oil inside the intercooler, period.
If you're running a K&N filter, pitch it in the trash where it belongs.
Don't forget to pressure test the intercooler, been a good number of those failing lately due to age and corrosion.
Test for leaks at the intake plate, where it bolts to the head, as well.

If the intercooler is junk, invest in a '99-'02 Power Stroke Intercooler, along with either an WH1C or an HX35W.

Mark.

Lagmaster or not, 9psi is way low. Is there a lot of smoke? How high is the engine revving?

It has a small air filter right on the turbo. It was oily so I took it off and drove the truck down the road, now it gets 16psi. How do I tell what exhaust housing I have? Part number?

It's stamped on the turbine housing, right past the flange where it bolts to the manifold. It think it's on the backside of it, so I doubt you could see it without a little mirror.

WOW What a restrictive filter! Get a BHAF and away you go. I use the duralite 105006 on mine. Mine would just make 10psi stock but after tuning and BHAF I get 25psi now. If the TC is in a good mood. If not 20psi. PS I also have the LAGMASTER :( :( :(
