Yet another TURBO question HX40?

Postby oliverbutthead » Thu Dec 27, 2012 3:05 pm

I have just been getting into hopping up the beater lately especially after driving my dad's 07'. This old goat feels like a turd after driving a mildly hopped up newer cummins...... I am looking to beef it up pretty good but not try and turn it into a hot rod.

My main question currently is what exactly to look for in an HX40 turbo? Looking so far, I have been lead towards one with a 16cm exhaust housing and bigger than 60cm squared compressor housing? I am leaning towards the HX40 for ease of hookup and price compared to the HE351CW.

So far I have turned the fuel screw in a few turns and added a Denny T fuel stage II fuel pin. Very next thing in line is a LPLP lift pump. I have been trying to get a hold of the hungry diesel to order one of these(12psi) I have the 4" exhaust waiting for the turbo and planning on upgrading intake along with it. I am also looking into getting stage II or III DDP injectors in the future.

Look up rccummins on here for the lplp.

You will want the Super 40. 7 blade compressor if i remember right. If you have an auto, the 16cm housing will be fine.

I got the 12 psi pump from him a few weeks ago and it works great.

Supposedly, the HX40 doesn't like to be barked because it's got such a large set of wheels on a shaft that was made for HX35-sized wheels. There's no denying the things make power, but if you plan on abusing it much it may be worth looking into something S300-based just for reliability's sake.

I honestly haven't heard of one grenading in quite a while now, but there were a few stories of it floating around back when I was looking for a turbo. If you think you have the sense to treat your turbo right and not accidentally get too crazy with it, I'd get one, but all it would take is a couple really bad barks before I'd start looking at it pretty suspect, you know?

Is a 40 or 35 still a pretty good fairly cheap upgrade for an auto truck that tows up to 10k ?

Well, maybe if I could find a decent used one with lower miles on it, then I would go with the HE351CW since so many people recommend it over any other. What else would be needed to get it hooked up?

The HX40 will need a different downpipe, as it's a 4" outlet. You wouldn't ever regret going to a full 4" exhaust as it does nothing but good things, but if you're looking for the simplest swap, the 35 is the way to go.

Those HX35's are tougher than a night in jail, but depending on what your towing conditions are it may come up a little short in the heat management department.

Thanks for the info BILTIT! That is a big help! How bout the down pipe? Will the same one for the HX40 work? http://www.cumminsperformanceparts.com/ ... 2x4di.html

Now I just need to save some money and search around for one. ... As well as gauges since I don't have any installed yet

The hx40 DP adapter is different than the 351cw, i bought the adapter i linked above and welded it on to my new 4" diamond eye exhaust.

If an HE351 is what you want, get good pics of it and look it over well before you buy it. Guys will beat on them and run them hot. Common Rails are the new hot rod, so finding a good, fairly priced one has posed problems for other people.

For what it's worth, I gave $80 for my HX35 and I love it. I suspect I'm moving a bit more fuel than you are at the moment too.

HE351's were also added with the tight housing for in cylinder EGR. Tight housing plus a cam with a bad exhaust profile would keep the exhaust in the cylinder. So the DP is through the roof, the EGT's can be hotter than Satan's farts, and that poor turbo is getting beat to hell.
