89 Power Steering pump?

I have a hole in the diaphragm on the bottom of the power steering pump that tees into the brake booster can someone tell me what the bottom one does? It's on my 89

That's the vacuum pump and if your brakes didn't get worse, that pod was bad anyway. As long as it isn't leaking oil, I wuldn't worry about it.

Just change to the 91-93 style sometime. There alot simpler

Thanks guys. The pump has bleed out bone dry. I have the motor pulled for a transplant and will be running a brakes that don't need vacuum. So I'm guessing the pump is toast and I'll be looking into what it takes to run a 91-93 pump.

I'd like to find this thread too.

The way I did it was to buy a complete vacuum and power steering assembly off of a '94. To my knowledge, any assembly from a 12v should work. I unhooked the vacuum and power steering lines, removed the two bolts holding the assembly on the frone gear case, and wiggled it out. To install the new one, I removed the wiring from the oil pressure sensor and intalled oil line for the new vacuum pump. There's a plug (hex head in my case) on the block and that's where the oil line goes. I then PATIENTLY slid the new assembly in after putting a gasket (RTV in my case) on the front of it. The new assembly is bigger and it's a tight fit, but everything does fit how it's supposed to. Then reconnect the oil line for the vacuum pump, the wiring for the oil pressure sensor, and the power steering lines. As for the vacuum lines, I cut them off where they tee and there was just enough to reach the vacuum pump. You could also plug the unused one.

Throttle bracket? I originally cut up the old one, but shortly after I aquired an intercooled one.

Yea thats the one i was talking bout,I couldnt remember if you could cut the original to fit or if you had to have the new style

I had to whittle on the intercooled one and reweld some strength back into it because of my non-IC lines. It would have been necessary when I intercooled it a bit later anyways

hey guys im looking to swap to the newer one myself to fit my 89 engine into my 67 chevy. I was wondering about the oil line? is it a return or pressure feed? didnt notice a plug anywhere close to tie into.

The line is pressure (I think) and I seriously doubt you could see the plug with a vacuum and power steering pump in place.
