turbo upgrade for 90 non IC

Postby rockmike » Mon Jan 21, 2013 4:33 pm

hey guys,A buddy of mine has a 90 cummins truck and hes blowin oil out his turbo...hes not comfortable rebuilding it.So he asked if I knew of a good upgrade turbo for him with out going intercooled(he just dont have the funds to do the IC mod also)

First: what turbo is on these OE non ic trucks??

second:is there a good upgrade for him...or is he best off to just stick with the rebuilt OE type turbo?

Thanks!

I would go with an HE351 or S300 62 or 63mm turbo.

Welcome first off. That truck has the H1C on it and you can upgrade to a HX35 but you will need to do a little fab work to make the crossover pipe work.

Thanks for the welcome. :D

H1c I thought that was the stock Ic'd turbo off the 91.5 to 93 cummins? His truck is a 5 speed if that matters.

Thanks for the quick responces guys, thats awsome!

1. Welcome

2. 50mm Holset H1C is stock.

3. Other than the H1C (which they make a larger version of) and the HX35, used stock turbos sky rocket into the $3-400 range. Be aware if he decides to upgrade, he'll need a new intake because the stock rubber boot's end will be too small for the new turbo.

If he doesn't have the funds to intercool it, I doubt he wants to drop a Cleveland on a turbo, Jon

Sure appreciate the help and info guys.I think he should rebuild it! especially since hes hurtin on cash flow. Then look for the hx35 and do the power stroke Ic mod on it when funds are better for him.

I put the hx35 on my 93 5 speed cummins truck and LOVE it.For some reason I was thinkin the 90 turbo was a differant beast because of the lack of the IC.

Where's your location? I have a non IC'd H1C that I'd part with to help a guy out if I didn't have to ship it.

FYI, non IC'd H1C= 50mm inducer and 18cm exhaust housing and IC'd H1C= 54mm (?) and either a 21cm housing (auto) or an 18cm housing (manual)

Don't waist ur time w an h1c they are laggy and small hx40 would be the way to go but if he's got enough fuel to scatter that h1c then he needs to be careful barking a 40 1 real good bark and Ull snap the shaft if his funds are real low he can pic up a used hx35 in the 150-250 range

My vote is for the hx35....if kept mildly tuned.
