Depends, I will run one on my 91 eventually, and probably check it every time I swap fuel filters, which was every 10k...

I'm due for an oil change and fuel filter here in about 500 miles. I didn't know if they were a screen and they'd theoretically last forever or if there's filter media in there.

I haven't opened one up, but here is a little story for you...

During my first deployment to Iraq in early 2003, several of out 5 ton trucks had 8.3 Cummins in them. The fuel filtration system was basically the same, except they had an in line prefilter almost exactly to what I posted earlier. The problem we had was that there was a modification kit for these trucks to use install a HUGE fuel filter and replace that little strainer, but most of the trucks didn't get them installed in time to push north into Iraq. Problems arose, lots of plugged up strainers because of the crappy fuel we had, and no new strainers to replace them. So, in a pinch, when one would plug up, we would pull it off real quick and blow through the outlet and clean it out as best we could so we could continue moving... Worked many times.

So, in therory, one could use one for quite a while if you could blow it out and get most of the trash out of it. I bought a pack of them, and didn't spend too much, I think they were a few bucks a piece...

Yea I looked around and they're stainless mesh inside. They range from about $6-15.

The important part of this equation: How does the cylinder wall inside of the pump look? How does the piston (plunger) itself look on the side. If there are no visible scratches or gouges, you can probably replace the piston assembly and run it. If there are gouges or scratches...well, obviously it is not going to work well.

Mike is really helping out here... thanks Mike.

Bryan, you would, somewhat comfortably too. I have had a friend of mine hitch a ride in it, back when it was my only means of transportation...and he liked it.
