Is a KSB necessary?

Postby Mustangracer42 » Mon Jan 28, 2013 10:21 pm

I have a ve pumped motor that was used as a water well pump. I bought it cheap and rebuilt it to put in a ford F 550. Ive got the motor back together and was looking at the pump and noticed it doesnt have a KSB. I understand its a cold start assistance mechanism and we do get cold weather here in the winter. Is this pump worth using? Is there any recommendations for what I need to do if anything?

I intend to run the grid heaters but dont want to be stranded if the truck sits out all night and then wont start in the morning if its needed.

Thanks in advance

My bigger concern would be the fact that most water well pump Cummins have a governor that runs at a fixed speed of around 1800 RPM's to prevent the water well pump from cavitating. On the KSB, if the original application started and ran fine without the KSB then it should continue to do the same where ever you transplant it.

id pull it apart and check. you may need more parts. i had a few industrial pumps apart, and they did not use the same set up. instead of having the srping hook to throttle shaft and then the top hat thingy, it had a goofy thing that i cant decribe because i forgot what it looked like.

Got it apart today. Looks like all other truck application pumps. It looks brand new. I was told the owners had just put a new pump and injectors in it trying to fix a miss it had. Those parts didnt fix it so I bought it from them really cheap and took the info about the new parts with a grain of salt. When I tore it down I found the cause of the miss....the crank gear had spun on the crank and threw off the timing.

I'm 99% sure the governor weights and some of the related linkage is different. Be forewarned; If it drives like it has cruise control that has a mind of its own then the source will be the governor weights and linkage.

I would try it and see how it acts. If it acts normal then run it. If it wants to float around then I would change it.

Is there anything I can visually inspect to verify? Its much easier to work on right now since the motor is still on a stand and the vacuum/ ps pump is not in the way.

Well, i have another ve pump from a truck. It's a core only pump. What parts should I swap from this pump to the one used on the well motor in order to ensure normal operation?

Thanks in advance.

Btw, I went ahead and put the motor in this weekend but the pump is still apart on the bench waiting to hear your responses.
