Stuff you wish you would have done

Postby Billy Bones » Sun Feb 17, 2013 1:33 pm

I have my 89 motor on a stand right now and was wondering what I should fix or seal or upgrade. It's bone stock non I/C.
Things I will be doing are
Supper duty I/C that I already have
3200 rpm spring I have
KDP fix
Rear main seal
Valve cover gaskets

So I'm just looking for some pointers/advice for getting the motor in the best shape with out a full rebuild now that it's in the garage.

Thanks

Steam it off and replace every seal you can. Check the KDP, lock tight the timing case bolts. Thats just a few things.

Tappet cover, rear main seal, front seal, timing case cover, all valve covers, entire injection pump..... all have been re sealed, at least once.

So, since you've had to do this after the engine was in now, would you recommend using no gaskets and just using the applicable RTV sealant on things like timing case, timing case cover, oil pan, tappet cover, etc?

I would definitely use the gaskets and not rtv. I just am saying I didn't do any gaskets before I put the engine in, because nothing was leaking at the time.... yet I wish I would of done it then.

X2 on no rtv.....I use the 3M weather stripping adhesive on gaskets,I clue both sides and it doesn't leak.....ever.
Of course you will never use the same gasket twice either.

Yea, I always use hi-tack on both sides of gaskets and never have problems, but I have friends that the only gaskets they will use are head gaskets.

I know I had trouble seeling a warped tranny pan once and finally gave up and used "the right stuff" and it has not leaked since, so I have considered using it other places.

Ive been known to use it when i don't have a gasket at the time, if your gonna use it use the grey stuff, the stuff that burns your hand if you get it on you  but if you have the time just get gaskets

If the timing case bolts worry you, use the updated ones from a 24 valve or Commonrail.
They have a wider head surface and use a large Torx bit to screw them in and out.
I've torn a LOT of those apart that were still as tight as the day they went in.

Should I buy a full gasket kit or part it together? I already have the rear main. Any gaskets to stay away from?
Thanks a lot guys this is getting me pumped.
