Turbo removal

Postby mitchk » Thu Mar 21, 2013 5:33 pm

Ok. So I'm trying to remove my turbo to rebuild it and the exhaust manifold bolts are really giving me some trouble. I soaked them in PB for a couple hours then took the torch to them for a while and nothing. They won't move at all and I'm scared of stripping them. Any tips or should I just keep soaking them over night and try again tommorow. Trying to have this done befor the end of the weekend. Thanks for any help

It seems sketchy, but I've had alot of luck on giving the wrench a smack with a hammer as close to the bolt as I could. A smack looser, then tighter, then looser has worked for me quite a few times on turbos and exhaust manifolds.

Sounds like a good idea to just free up that 20 years of rust but definetly sounds kinda sketchy. Im just gonna soak it tonight then try that in the morning. Are those bolts anything special or can I get new ones easy if I end up messing them up

They're metric. I don't know why they'd be special. I'm sure Fastenal would have what you need.

Are you taking the manifold off with the turbo or just the 4 nuts/studs for the turbo?

I've ran the trucks down the road s few times hard to get them hot then removed the nuts. Its a pain but on two of them it was the only way to get them apart.

ye was thinking of that but i already unbolted the intake and exhaust and intercooler piping so was kinda too lazy to put it all back on to just take it off again. gonna head over and try cmann250s idea of hitting the wrench with a hammer to try and shake some of that rust outa there but if that doesnt work thats my next option. thanks for the help

Heat it with a torch before you hit it like that.

Thanks all. I heated them a bit and lightly taped them and eventually they came out but now I'm starting to tear it apart and I I've come into another problem. Two of the four bolts holding the exhaust housing on dont have enough room to thread all the way out. They are the two behind the oil inlet and the outlet. I would post pics but am not by a computer at the moment. Not sure if I can loosen them then move the housing off a bit to give them more room then thread them out completely. Will post pics wen I can if that helps. Thanks

Sounds like the studs came out. It happened to me and I had enough room to back them out. I just rocked the housing one way then the other.

I put the ones that did that back where they're easy to get to for next time.

Sorry. Guess I worded that wrong. i got the turbo off and one of my studs did come off but I was able to thread it out all the way.

I'm trying to take the turbo itself apart to rebuild it and two of the bolts holding the exhaust housing are hitting the center section where the oil inlet and outlet are. Like I said don't know if I can thread them out a bit then move the housing off a little to give them more room but I don't want to start trying stuff and possibly mess something up.

Are you talking about these bolts?

There is one on top and bottom? Might be able to twist the exhaust housing enough for them to come out if its not froze on there really bad.

No alignment pins in those. Those plates just act like a clamp. Rust will be the only thing to keep the housing from rotating. May need to soak and heat that, too.

If this were an HX35, you could use bolts to pre-load the housing by pushing on the compressor's back plate, then heat the housing with a torch until it pops loose.
But that won't work on the H1C with the bolted aluminum back plate.

Mark.
