Boost leak ?

Postby cummins32 » Thu Apr 04, 2013 4:40 pm

I installed an hx35, and put the stock exhaust housing off the h1c on it. Cruising I have no boost unless I get on it. At WOT I hear a very high pitched whistle. (like a vgt). Also, my boost gauge flutters at WOT. Any ideas ? I was thinking a boost leak. Thanks

How many pounds of boost are you making at WOT? The HX will make some racket while making boost if the silencer ring is taken out. Been there, done that  The HX sounds a lot different than the H1C to me.

I can't believe you have much of a leak if you're making 34 pounds. If you plugged the hole where the waste gate hose used to hook up, I don't know what else to suggest.

If it's squealing it's probably a leak.

Food for thought, I had a boost leak once that was so loud I actually had to let off so my ears didn't bleed. I could still get full boost, but my temps were hotter. Have yet to figure that one out How can one still have to the pound exactly the same boost at the intake yet temps are being affected by this pinhole leak?

Ya, I'm not real sure, it's an ear piercing noise though. But the needle on the gauge flutters.

Hope it's not a head gasket.... only time I've seen my gauge flutter was from that.

But a boost leak should also cause the flutter. I'd check your hose clamps.

Check to see if all of the intake plate bolts are tight to the head. Also make sure the o-ring for the cast elbow is good. Had a bad leak there before. Is there a leak between the turbine housing and the bearing housing?

I'll check it all out tomorrow, and report back, but if it does happen to be a headgasket, it'll get some headstuds and o-ringed :)

Go Haisley A1 studs..... better design and they can be had for cheaper. Have to bottom tap the block instead of mill your rocker stantions.

Doesn't seem to be the head gasket, no leaks, that I could see, and coolant level hasn't changed, forgot to mention the downpipe has a slight leak on the back of the exhaust housing

Good.... now just to track down the boost leak. Anything behind the turbo won't affect it...... it CAN affect spool up.... in some scenarios.
