Good deal. Too bad 855s, 1150s, 903s, 3406s, and 2 stroke Detroits are a thing of the past. It would have been soooo cool to be a diesel mechanic 30 years ago. ISXs and 60 series Detroits just aren't the same.

Shoot, in the Iowa Guard we still have 855's, 903's, and a huuuuge fleet of 8V92's. We are getting newer stuff with C7 and C15 scaterpillars :puker: I am only 31, but that older stuff is all I have really ever worked on...

Thing of the past, huh? Still a LOT of them out there! Mostly ag now, though. 3406B and Big Cams are still used around here yet, on the road. Largely grain haulers. Companies like MF and Stieger couldn't make up their minds on what engines to run. Cat, Cummins mostly. Ranging from a 3208, 3306, 3406 Cats. 555, 855, 903, 1150 Cummins. Hell, even Deere had a N14 in a self-propelled silage chopper years back!

The new electronic engines would a LOT better, if you could get rid of the emissions garbage! Have a 2014 T800 KW with a 450 ISX15. The extra chit they have on it is unreal! Still haven't driven it, other than to move it around in the shop or yard. Have NO desire to run it either. HATE the mirrors and I HATE a 10spd trans with a passion!

ONE particular type of person is the end all and do all and the way to tell if an engine, much less any other mechanical item, has weathered the test of time.
If a FARMER still runs an engine of ancient technology, it means it's durable and it's still cheap to acquire and fix.
Just because it's old as the hills doesn't mean you throw it away.

Think about how many ORIGINAL owner tractors are still out there.
I personally know of at least 4 original owner late 60s Ford and International Grain trucks around and they don't look a whole lot different than when I saw them as a kid.

 Awesome Nixon quote of the day right here ^ It's so true.

Where I work, there's a 500hp 3406-powered '91 Pete (kind of electronic), a '94 Pete with a 350 hp C15, a 80's W900 with a 450hp Big Cam (formerly 903 powered 8) ), and an old GMC Brigadier with a 290 Cummins. The older Pete and the KW get the most miles put on them hands down.

It would have been cool to be around when those trucks were common OTR trucks. The plastic Freightliners and Volvos that I see commonly now a days are just awful in performance and looks.

One day I really, really, really want to have an 1150 powered farm truck tuned up to a modest 800 or so horse with bone stock external appearance. If 359 ci is fun, then 1150 ci must just this side of heaven.

You're not alone  3 weeks of class and then summer "vacation" starts. I drive my truck so much, I don't know how I'll take it off the road to paint the cab.

Did you ever go to national convention? I was there last year (fall '11?). I'm getting old

I'd appreciate the positive vibes that the Ford will be gone shortly

I like shifting gears, but the fuel economy would be wretched. Emphasis on the wretched. Plus constantly finding the next part to wear out would be tedious. I'd definitely miss that extra 100 horse and 200 lb-ft of torque.
