Going back to stock

Postby Nitrous05 » Mon Apr 15, 2013 6:39 pm

So I just bought a 1990 ram 250. I was told that the pin was turned and something else was adjusted close to runaway point but to "not worry about it". Obviously this worries me. It smokes a lot and chugs when you shift into the next gear before the turbo spools (like its getting too much fuel). I'm not familiar with the ve pump, I've only ever tuned the ppumps. What do I take apart and what do I look for. I would like to turn it back down for fuel economy and the sole fact I don't want it to runaway. It does have a Schwitzer turbo (same as a s300) and 9492 nozzles. It really scoots but I need more reliability than anything, and I'm not a fan of all the smoke. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks

If you tighten up the AFC and back the smoke screw out it should help some on the smoke and spooling. He has the power screw turned in close to runaway.

Also, it will help if you shift at a higher rpm. That turbo is an extremely fast spooling turbo, unless it has absolutely huge injectors it should spool very quickly

You should try not to lug it or shift under about 1800 rpms. The "chugging" kills these transmissions. You will get better mileage if you leave the the fuel screw in some, If you can keep your foot out of it. ;)
If the rpms seem to hang or return to idle slowly you are near runaway. If you are worried about runaway, back the fuel screw out a turn or so, then reset your idle. Make the other adjustments that were recommended. You should still have plenty of power and the mileage should be better than stock.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

the rpm's go right back down when you let off the throttle. I try not to let it chug, I usually run 4th gear until im doing 50-55 or so. I will make the adjustments this weekend and take it for a spin. hope I get it straightened out. also does anyone know the specs on the 9492 injectors?
