93 stalling at idle

Postby Higbean » Wed Apr 24, 2013 5:55 pm

I'm pulling my hair out with my 93 Cummins. I was headed to the gas station the other night and I thought I heard it suck some air. It's done this before. The RPM's dropped and it took more throttle to get up to speed. I fueled up and things seemed fine. The next morning I fired it up and idled down the street. When I applied the brakes it bucked a few times, blew black smoke and died. I started it back up and went home. It has continued to stall out and act as if it's sucking air bubbles intermittently. Here is a video of what it's doing.

I have deleted the FSS, checked all fuel lines, changed fuel filter, plumbed to a fuel can, bled the injectors, bled the filter and changed the fuel pump. The filter bleeder bubbles a tiny bit when I first start pumping, but no signs of air after the initial pump or two. I'm starting to wonder if something has plugged the return line as I haven't checked that. Is something that would cause these issues? It was running pretty good at higher rpm's but it seems to be getting worse. Any thoughts on this? Much appreciated.

From everything I've read over the years I would say your injection pump is starting to die on it.

If the pump is trying to die,you could try turning in the fuel screw some. That should raise its pressure some.

I was hoping the IP was not the problem but I've been thinking it was all along. I would however like to make sure that is in fact the problem before I pony up a ton of cash. Is there any way to be 100%? Also, where is the best place/deal on a reman?

Sounds like a broken return spring inside the pump to me.

You were on the money!!

Got her all tore down. Both return springs were broken in the exact same places. Anyone know a good place for pump parts?

Thanks again RC!!!

Any injection pump shop should be a Bosch dealer. The return spring kit should run around $50

Well I got my parts today from a pump shop down in Woodland. Nice guys, but I could tell they felt I had no business rebuilding my own pump. He asked me how I was gonna calibrate it. I told him I'd be ready with a block of wood. He looked a little pissed. Can't win em all I guess.

Yep, good ol' injection pump shop guys.

Should of told them that by removing the head and replacing two springs doesn't throw off the "delicate" calibration of the pump that we all screw up anyways by messing with the starwheel, injectors, fuel screw, and timing.

Well, I just ran into a little snag. When I pulled my pump apart I noticed it did not have a spring in the center of the x shaped coupler. It's what I would call a lovejoy coupler. I've seen a few guys not use them so I think it will be ok. It ran good without it but I also have broken return springs. I should have got the spring from the pump shop but I forgot. Will I be ok without it or should I wait until I get the part? Trying to get this thing running for a trip next weekend.

Looking at the pdf it doesn't show a spring so I'm thinking I'll go ahead and button her back up.

Wait til you get both return springs.

I have no idea what you are referring to by the x shaped coupler......... I'm not thinking

I've got the return springs. Number 50 and 51 is what I'm talking about.
