I think my engine is giving up

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Thu Apr 25, 2013 8:08 pm

:bom: :x

I'm getting a random ticking noise coming that radiates out the exhaust....... know idea what that is.

I get some weird noises at certain acceleration in 2nd....and 3rd.....

Apparently at 15psi (extended freeway driving 75mph) I have a tremendous amount of blow by..... out my front seal.....

I can flop my crank forward and back what feels like a mile.......

my truck pukes smoke upon start up when cold, til warmed up.....even if it's 50 degrees overnight.

 Dumb

My problem.... do I spend the money now, to only replace yet another gasket that will probably not last long because of crank case pressure and add more breathers. And hope nothing lets loose, til I feel like rebuilding it.

Or just spend the money now? I hate spending money...... absolutely hate it.

Odometer quit working at 127,000

Previous Owner said - "I keep religious track of it because it is a company vehicle and I know for a fact that it has exactly 200,000"

If that's true, about 275,000 now..... I've driven it 2 years now..... this month actually.

and in that time, it has been down a total of 4 months replacing head gasket or transmission, or an axle etc....

I'll double check the valve lash.

The good lord is really quick to control my life in a way where my stupidity gets re directed.

This morning the timing belt broke on the car....... doesn't matter right now if my motor wants to give up or not, as it is now officially the ONLY vehicle we have.

2004 Chevy Aveo.

Just replaced the stupid thing 30k miles ago.... Well, I didn't because I didn't feel like doing it. I even asked the guy if he replaced the water pump o ring when he rotated it...... to which he said "no, that's not needed". I guarantee that's what happend. They start leaking coolant onto the tensioner and the tensioner seizes up.

If your vehicle is the only one you have right now, just run it. It doesn't hurt to do some cheap checks to be sure its not going to pile up right away though.

I've got to go buy a cheap throw a way car today, then figure out what to do with the engine in this.... rebuild it, or just throw in another used one.

Then I'll get back to my truck..... I was thinking in bed last night for half the night about it.

I think I'm just going to put on a bigger turbo and my injectors when they come in, then back the timing off for better wrist pin and rod bearing life..... vent the oil fill tube and probably a valve cover or two, then put a speedy sleeve on the front crankshaft.

Then run it, until it won't start easy, burns a gallon of oil, or starts knocking....... because as of right now, I'm blowing it out the front seal and have some odd strange noises every once ina while, but I don't really go through oil yet.

Mark has mentioned the thrust bearing being shot/gone in some of the 6BT's he's dealt with, can't remember the post he mentioned it in though. :?

Don't feel bad, I am running a 1998 Rav4 2.0 4cyl 5 spd. Unbelievably gutless. Clunking rearend and blown headgasket on the 90, engine needs rebuild on the 1996. Turns out the head and headgasket were fine on the 96, must have a cracked block or something, found antifreeze in oil again after 900 kms.

Check your oil cooler it will let oil and antifreeze mix when its messed up.

What I would do is pull the engine, tear it down, and then decide weather to rebuild or buy a new one. IMO it wouldn't hurt any to take it apart and find out for sure what is wrong with it, and it fixable, rebuild it. Wouldn't necessarily be cheaper or easier, but would be more reliable then another used one.

It's always cheaper to rebuild a running engine than put in another used one.

If the work is done yourself, you can completely rebuild a Cummins for a under $2k

If I was to pull an engine, IMO it wouldn't be worth putting it back in without rebuilding it.... I would never pull an engine just to tear it down and stare at it.

Well, my thinking is that if someone were to get another engine, they would have to pull and engine out. And unless selling it as a whole engine that needs a rebuilt, why not spend a little time to figure out what was wrong with it (whether to rebuild it or to junk it). You aren't going to lose anything. I like to take things apart to find out why they don't work. That's just me.
