It's about time to restock my shelves. Do filters ever realistically go bad? I've put 5,000 miles on my Dodge thus far which multiplies out to 15,000 this year. I'm changing the fuel filter every other oil change. It's due for a fuel and oil filter in ~4,000 at 265,000. Am I stupid to buy up 7 oil filters and 3 fuel filters to last me to 300,000. I have the next interval covered. That should cover me until 2015.

I hear the hype about filter prices going up too. True? It also always ends up that I have time to do this stuff at about 9 at night and 250 miles over the interval, so I like to have a stash.

I don't think it's stupid to stock up. Kinda leads to sticker shock the next time you buy though. If you don't have fuel issues, don't change the filter so often. That will save you some money.

Eh, 10,000 is such an easy number to remember. The FSM says every other oil change, so I ran with it. I've never felt like one was plugged up and making the truck feel like a dog either.

filters will not deteriorate sitting on the shelf for a reasonable amount of time. years=ok. decades=questionable. if you find a filter that your happy with as far as quality and price it will save you the time, expense and convenience from running out and buying each one at a time. I don't think its necessary to change your fuel filter every other time you change your oil, but its really dependent upon how dirty your fuel and tank are. get yourself setup with pre and post fuel (filter) pressure guauges. then you will be able to tell when it is starting to get clogged up and determine when it needs to be changed. I was down to one oil filter on my shelf and went and got 10 more. I purposely have been without an extra fuel filter because I wanted to run a smaller micron rated filter in the stock location so I can run a primary filter a bit more efficiently. I found an 11 micron absolute rated filter so I grabbed two of them.

Install a fuel pressure gauge. Best way to tell you when to change it out. Just keep a spare and a wrench in the truck with you on the road. Good to do anyhow. Never know when you'll get a bad load of fuel. Been there, done that.

I like to keep a couple of filters on hand but I woulnt stock alot with no more miles than you run annually. They have been known to rust on top in a barn over time with the humidity. Oil filters about the same. But if keep in controlled envirament they would last a long time.
