hx35 installed, not as much bottom end now

Postby cummins32 » Thu May 09, 2013 3:41 pm

I installed a hx35 a few months ago, and my truck just doesn't have the bottom end like it used to, I've adjusted the starwheel, up to get it to spool faster, but it hasn't changed, It'll build about 35lbs and can it about 1550 on the egts, Just a few hundred degrees to hot for my likings

That doesn't completely make sense, as the smaller housing on the HX should make it spool quicker. Have you checked for boost leaks? By any rate, 5x12s are a whole lot of injector for an HX35.

Da, I'm smelling either boost or drive leak.

What're your gauges saying? Pop the hood and give the throttle arm a swipe while you're standing there, watch for any puffs of smoke coming from the exhaust pre-turbo.

Money is on exhaust gasket leak.

3:1 odds on the wastegate not working correctly

I put the h1c exhaust housing on it, so I didn't have to deal with the wastegate. I run about 35psi but that's to the floor, and It spools right away but I have to be at least 3/4 throttle. I thought I had a boost leak, but I checked and couldn't see any. and about 1500 degrees wide open on egts

Well, then that's why.

You have the same size exhaust housing you did with the h1c, but now have a bigger compressor...... so yes it will spool slower.

But shouldn't that mean lower egt's ? Because a stock h1c housing is a 16cm ? Then with the bigger compressor it will move more air ? Or am I completely messed on my turbo understanding lol

Stock h1c is either 18 or 21 depending on the year.

Too large or too small of a housing will cause high egts.

A small housing will cause higher egts when "getting on it" or high rpms.

A large housing will cause higher egts when lower rpm or lower load.

35# of boost is about all you can expect from a hx35 any way so having a bigger exh housing only means building boost later. Running 5x12's mean you either have to turn down your IP or keep your foot off the peddle so much.
From what I've read the 35 limits how far you can push the 5x12's. You need a bigger turbo if you want to get max power from the 5x12's.

What size turbo would you recommend ?

The HE351 is what EVERYONE seems to love, but it may not be the ticket for you, depending on your plans for the truck and how you use it. I suspect the HE351 would be great if the truck's a pavement pounder, but if 5x12s are just a stop on the way to something like 6x16s, save your money for something bigger. Also, HE351s seem to be stupid expensive around us.
