No boost to afc

Postby nickmwelds » Wed Oct 23, 2013 11:30 am

Sooooo. In my brilliance after adjusting my timing, fuel delivery, fuel pin, and star wheel. I noticed about a week later that the manifold boost line to the afc was disconnected. Luckily banjo bolt and washers where still in place. Now it's hooked back up and the truck acts and drives the SAME. What gives?. My trucks a welding rigs even with all the added weight it's very surprising that the truck would run the same, even with out any input from the turbo? I've had this truck for 4 years and 1 transmission. And had never tweaked pump. All this tweaking and shes got no change in behavior.

Is it just me or is this pretty strange?

Your rod is probably stuck in its bore, it's what rides up and down the ramp of the fuel pin. Pull the top of the AFC and remove the fuel pin. Look down its bore and max your throttle linkage. If no little pin sticks out into that bore it's siezed up.

pull the pump top off and work it free, then pull it out and check it. get a seal kit for it and replaced the seals. mine did this, but i was able to soak the pump top in ATF over night and then work the pin free

Depending on your throttle lever design (there were several), you may be able to get at the plug on the front of the pump without taking anything apart. On my pump, it's an allen key to open it. Push it forward from the outside and back from the inside. Add some spray oil and repeat.

I pulled the fuel pin out to observe its travel and everything looks good.

Now I'm really confused.

So with the cone out if you go full throttle the pin pops out into sight?

Yes exactly. But it never fully retracts making it a huge bugger to get the fuel pin dropped back in. Now seeing everything appears to be working properly.… I'm starting to think my injectors have ran out of life. 313K a lot of mean miles.

Lift pump?

Or was that covered under "fuel delivery" in your original post? Did you mess with the main fuel screw?

Afc line got a hole in it? I had a truck with a line that was kinked shut. Replaced it and the difference was very noticeable.

Works is a pretty loose term, it may move fuel but once you're under load and turning the engine at a decent rpm it may not be supplying anywhere near enough fuel.

Is it still a stock lift pump, and did you turn in the fuel screw on the back of the pump? Any smoke when driving around? When lugging it, during a hard pull, or anytime after the turbo has spooled?

I do not have a fuel pressure gauge but lift pump seems to be working well. Lift pumps a few years old.
I turned the fuel screw on the back of the pump. 2 turns in.
My truck blows a small amount of smoke only at startup. Full throttle up hill turbo lit I only get a light amount of haze.

What gauges do you currently have? EGT, Boost, fuel pressure, etc?

When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter?

Without a fuel pressure gauge you have no way of knowing if the lift pump is working or not.
