Turbo noise under boost HE351CW

Howdy. Was talking to another 1st gen owner and he said the turbo starts making a noise after about 12 psi. Said it sounds similar to a pneumatic tool. Its a HE351cw. Shaft seems ok without excessive play and don't look like the compressor is touching the housing. Would that be considered a surge? Thanks

BTW The truck is a '90 non I/C with the VE turned up and a AirDog LP

Eric- Imagine revving up a pneumatic die grinder. He said it sounds similar to that. The turbo whistles up to a certain point and then makes that noise.

dazedandconfused- He said he checked the clamps and seal between the intake horn and grid heater.

I might see if he can get a recording of the noise or something.

The boots will sound like that, I left one loose under the cab of my rock truck and it sounded ridiculous. Like when you blow up a balloon, them pull it apart right where the air is going out. Well, if the balloon was 6 layer silicone anyways.


It may actually be a boot with a hole in it.

I had my manifold get loose right after I put on my steed speed and it made that noise

Ok checked it all out turbo looks good no rubbing anywhere, the boots looked good also, but still makes that noise. Ive had this turbo on for awhile I just hooked my airdog 150 up took it for a spin, I put it to the floor in 5th and had the water/meth on also probably went past 40psi then made the noise, now it starts it around 11psi. Think it could be the intake gaskets?
I still see about 40psi but loss of power in 4th and 5th only.

Are your exhaust manifold bolts tight? I didn't lose any boost when my steed speed was loose, but I'd get to about 20 psi and it'd start making noise. Swapped to the right bolts and torqued them and now it only makes the right noises

When the intake plate gasket blew on my truck it just made a faint hiss and would'nt build over 12 psi.

Ok I'll check the manifold bolts and my intake bolts were loose I'll replace the gaskets just to be sure. I'll fill yall in over weekend when I get back in.

Have you pressureized the system with shop air to try and track it down. I wouldn't be surprised if its not the intercooler.

When I blew the intake gasket on my truck......it was louder than a train whistle, but still made full boost.
