A HVLP gun is low on requirements. You could get by with 3 to 5 CFm or less I bet.
Air sanders need 10 CFM or higher most of the time.
Macco and the other low rent spray places only spray for a cheap price. They will shoot over anything on the truck that didn't come off with a mop down of thinner. Any body work they do is extra and most of the time costs more that a normal body shop. They also use a no name paint. If it si something you plan on dumping after its painted. Go for it. If you plan on keeping it. Stay away.
The place I got a quote from didn't want to take the body to bare metal. It didn't want to use expoxy primer on bare metal. It didn't want to use my choise of paint. I was quoted $2500 for what they wanted to do. That was taking them a bare gutted cab and all the other loose sheet metal. NO bed. They also didn't want to do the firewall.
For the members that haven't seen my body rebuild here is a link. This will give you an idea of the effort and time required for a good paint job.
