Used engine oil?'s

Postby 93 W350 LE » Thu Oct 24, 2013 12:40 pm

What ae the benefits, if any, of burning it? Does it matter if synth or conventional? If you run it, did it improve anything?
Thanks.

I dump a couple of gallons in my tanks as often as possible. I do try to filter it in any way possible before hand. I believe that the motor quiets down a lot while running it and there is for sure no loss in power. I have run conventional and synthetic.

Any issues with fuel filters or loss of milage?

Neither, fuel mileage for me did not suffer and I have yet to change the fuel filter. But I will soon and will update. But I know it did not clog it.

Gutsy...
I would filter it, strain it or something.
Lots of bad stuff in motor oil mixed in with the good parts...
I do know that ULSD does not meet minimum lubricity requirements for the new high pressure pumps on the computer trucks (I also drive a 2011 d-Max)
And I know the fuel needs an additive, and the very best is B20 made from soy bears
So maybe there is some validity to the comment about the engine quieting down...
Thanks for trying it and posting it up!

My first impression is LESS smoke when I get on it.

Same here. Have not ran synthetic, but have run some 2 stroke also.

I'll just mention that due to the stuff they add to motor oil it doesn't burn all that well. Which would explain it being quieter. If it were a common rail I'd say don't use used motor oil, but given that it's a mechanical pump it probably helps it more than anything. I wouldn't run synthetic as there's more additives, and that'll hinder combustion somewhat

i'm not a fan of used motor oil unless it has been centrifuged or something. to much metal particles in it to be good to run through a high pressure, tight tolerance metal on metal pump. granted not as high of pressures as later models, but still, the added lube of the oil could easily be negated by debris in the oil

I always burn used engine oil in my engines. I don't think it benefits the engines, and in fact, it lowers the energy of the fuel, but it's a great way to get rid of it without such a mess.

I would never just pour it in the tank though. I always mix it about 1:4 in a jug first.

At work we have a blending unit that, in one motion, sucks the oil from our engine sumps, blends it with fresh fuel, filters the blend and puts it back in the fuel tank. It's just a unit that the shipyard built with the boat, nothing really prepackaged. You'll get a little extra smoke and your filter bowls (if they are glass) look kinda icky, but it all clears up as soon as you get through the high-oil content.

Good luck!

Oil burns slower than fuel so timing needs to be slightly advanced when running very much oil in your fuel. I usually get 2-3 mpg better with oil in my fuel ....

I ran it in my 12v second gen for a couple thousand miles. Settled in a 55 gallon drum mixed with 13% RUG for a week or two, drained the moisture and crud from the bottom using a ball valve I installed, used a $30 Harbor Freight 60gph clean water pump to push it through a 5 micron whole house filter then a 2 micron whole house filter and into a second drum. From there it went into the tank.

I ran it straight most of the time (or with unused ATF when I happened into some). It ran quieter and I got better mileage. EGTs were about 1-200 degrees higher and MUCH more smoke at WOT (none to speak of at idle or under normal driving conditions). Started fine and ran fine. Stinks like burning butt. When it got below 40 here, I had to keep my foot in the throttle a tiny bit for 30 seconds when cold-starting until it warmed the oil enough to run it through the pump at idle. I got it from a clean, dry source. Conventional and dino mixed together along with gear oil, ATF and power steering fluid. NO BRAKE FLUID.

If you want pictures of the filter setup, let me know.

Sure. I collect oil from a shop down the road that gives it to me for free using a hand-pump and a couple feed barrels:

Then I move it into the settling tank and add 13% unleaded gasoline (or about 5.5-6 gallons per 50 gallons of oil). I let that sit for a week to let the water and general filth settle to the bottom, which I then drain off using the ball valve at the bottom.

Then I plug in the pump and let it work, pushing the oil through two whole house filters from Lowes.

Finally, it goes into the last barrel where it's ready to go into the truck.

Just to be clear, I was running this in a p-pumped second gen. I'm not putting WMO in my 1st gen. Not because I think it can't burn it but because I'm completely homo for my first gen and don't want to run anything other than good #2, Diesel Kleen and the occasional quart of new, unused ATF type F.
