Leaky injectors ?

Postby jmos4 » Thu Jan 02, 2014 10:50 am

Hi

I've got a 89 d250 with a little over 200,000 on it is it common for the injectors to leak?

Is it just a matter of replacing o-rings to fix?

I'm a newbie but what I understand is a leaking injector is an internal issue. Getting them pop tested will determine if they need to be serviced or traded in for a new set. Some guys here built their own tester out of a bottle jack and a pressure gauge and some brass fittings. Pop tests are not cheap and you may get advice to simply buy a new set. Can't go wrong really. I believe our 9mm tip injectors are favorable to guys pushing big HP. You could probably sell them.

Its a external leak head is wet with fuel, runs fine no smoke so I don't believe there is are internal leaks

Tighten down your injector locknuts and see if it goes away. Most likely, they have loosened up or the coppers have shrunk over the years.

I'll have to try it this weekend as too dam cold out (- temps) what size are the hold downs as I think I will need a crowsfoot to get to them as attempted with a wrench and really couldn't get on them very well

when tightening them do I need to loose the return lines or injector connections?

Thanks

You'll have to pull the line off the injectors to get a good bite on the hold down nut. Factory spec is 44lb-ft, but I have gone a bit past that to keep them from bubbling...like 50-55lb-ft.

Yep... pull a valve cover or two and you can swing the injection line out of the way easier. DON'T OVERTIGHTEN the valve cover bolts either, they will leak.

You can pull the injector and return lines and torque it with a deep socket, or just snug it a little with a wrench. If you have more than 1 or 2 leaking, I'd say torque them all.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
