How much more whistle?

Postby bmw4aaron » Tue Jan 14, 2014 6:51 pm

The good ol snowball effect. What started out as just checking my air filter tuned into a BHAF, bracket (can't remember the name but plans are online), turbo rebuild and GDS 60mm wheel/housing. I'm LOVING the whistle but can more (louder) be had? I'm still running the big stock rubber boot from air filter to turbo. I've read as well as advised in another post here to change it over to a metal pipe. Just how much more whistle will this net me? Enough to justify another $70 or so in parts?

BMW runs a pipe into the cabin from the air box to make the engine sound loud under spirited driving. I'm tempted to do this so my ears will bleed while spooling.

Having a metal pipe in the intake will make the turbo louder. My HX rivals an E model 3406 and that's about the top of the tolerable scale.

Say what!? LMAO

If I did that on my truck, I would implode the windows or would run out of oxygen!

When I had the HX35 with factory intake, silencer ring MIA, it was decent. But then I added the ASA intake, then I called the truck the angry vacuum.

And now with thew Super HX40....lets just say I left the silencer ring in. At 35 PSI plus on the hills while towing, it was a wee bit too loud now!

Since it's not on the pressure side, you can get away with some cheaper couplers. No need for $30 silicone pieces.

http://store.airflo.com/45hl4.html

Or, any rubber 4" 45* will work if you can find them at a hardware store for plumbing or whatnot. Just make sure they're not made out of paper or something, they do have a small amount of vacuum to contend with. Just a normal piece of 4" exhaust pipe will do too, no need for anything fancy unless you want it.

A metal pipe will definitely make it louder.

Heres a pic of my old setup with those Airflo couplers and normal exhaust pipe. Worked and sounded great.

I later upgraded to an AFE ProDry air filter that was the same size as the BHAF, flowed and sounded even better than the BHAF, but if you're balking at buying $70 in couplers/piping I doubt you want to buy another $70 filter.

No idea, I bought it waaaaaaaay back as my first BHAF. It actually quieted the turbo almost completely, but the element inside of it wasn't nearly as big as the BHAF.

I'll go through my PB and stuff and see if I can find a part number. It was from Carquest.
