The carrier stubs where the bearing ride have most likely worn. That will let a bearing start moving around. Those bearings moving will hammer the shims right out.

High HP or heavy loads your going to have problems with carrier bearings coming loose. You will also see the carrier bearing outer races spinning inside the bearing caps.

I spun the carrier bearing assembly so hard that it spun the bearing on the shims, which chewed them up and kicked them out.

^^^^THIS^^^^ Is from my understanding is what happened. It spun the bearing housing itself, which chewed up the shims.

Thing I noticed was... everything else looked fresh, like it should have. It literally just grenade the driver's side.

I have seen this quite a few times over the years. Replace the carrier.

If the bearing outer race has spun in the housing. If the surface hasn't been chewed up. I normaly remove .005" from the end of the mounting cap and reinstall. In a month of so I will remove that cap and check for signs of the new bearings spinning agin. If it has I remove aother .005".

If it still turns after the second .005" then I scrap the housing and build a new axle.

This could have been a setup problem also. If the person didn't set the side play tight enough. That would allow the carrier to move side to side. Then it starts hammering. When I set a carrier in. You need a 2 lb hammer to seat it. I don't use a case spreader eather.

The 71 I replaced a couple of years ago due to a bad spindle has over 130K on a rebuild. A lot of that was towing heavey and long distance. The back lash and gear wear pattern are right where I set them in 1999.

SUPPOSEDLY.... he sets them up super tight. I figured that might actually of done it. But, after 50k miles.... I suppose it would of happened earlier if my thinking was right.

As of right now I'm looking for and at a couple of Dana 80s. I'm not one to put up with parts that may or may not break later down the road. I'm one that upgrades if I break. However, if I can't find one within a few days... this one will get overhauled AND receive a locker of some sort.

I have only set up a couple of axles, so I don't really know if this makes a difference in the long haul, but I made sure that I put in shims that were as thick as possible.
For example, if I had needed .064" in shims, I would have used a .040 & .024 shim instead of a .040, .012, .010 & .002 . . . Most bearing installs I have worked on, regardless of application, have signs that they "walked" at least on occasion, so I figure anything in there that is less than about .010" is going to get torn up & spit out at some point. I could be totally wrong, but it doesn't seem like it can hurt.
Good luck getting it squared away.

When I put the LSD in mine I used a case spreader. It was a PITA to put it in and out changing shims, but I can't imagine doing it with a hammer like Philip did. Mine was actually snug enough that even with the spreader I had to tap it in the last couple times. I also cheated, when I put it together the final time I put some Loctite on the bearing caps to help hold the races. ;)

The first Dana 80 that had 4.10 gears, limited slip, and disc brakes.... got there... it was a dana 70 with drums. Some people shouldn't breed.

I find it impossible to argue with that point. Some people really shouldn't breed
