Spent a while clearing a spot for the truck, then set it on some safety stands.

That doesn't look like fun.

That must be quite a piece of plywood, I'm surprised it can hold the weight on those 8 little feet.

Good luck, BC.

That platform is actually three layers of 3/4" pressure treated plywood.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Happy Birthday! 8)

Hoping for the same, myself . . . . . .

So, today, after work, I . . . :
- Disconnected the rear drive-shaft from the transfer-case, unbolted the carrier-bearing assembly, and set it to the side.
- Unbolted the auxiliary, fan assisted transmission fluid cooler from the skid-plate's rear frame.
- Unbolted the remote F2F heat exchanger & filter assembly from the skid-plate and trans cross-member and strapped it to the frame rail (out of the way).
- Removed the front drive-shaft assembly.
- Removed the transfer-case shifter assembly.
- Disconnected the transmission shifter linkage assembly and hung to the side.
- Disconnected the wiring associated with the auxiliary cooler fan's thermo-switch, trans over-temp thermo-switch, trans fluid temp sensor, shifter position switch, and OD solenoid. Tucked to the side.
- Drained the trans pan.

- Removed trans pan and associated internal filter finding that shown below:

The clean pan for reference:

Here's the filter:

I failed to get a pick of the trans pan's magnetic-plug but, it had a very small amount of the typical fine iron filings.

I must say I'm pleased with the little bit of stuff in the pan considering I've pretty-much abused this thing with perhaps 30 going on 40 or so 25psig boosted launches spread over perhaps 6000 miles (+) of trips to the beach over the last year or so. I can't remember exactly the last time I was in it but I feel comfortable in thinking at least a year ago.

I've still got to cut open the spin-on trans fluid filter cartridge to see what it's got inside, but based on the above, I don't believe I'm gonna see much.

Seeing the images above, would you tear into the trans to inspect/replace clutches, steels, thrust-washers, etc? Or just put a new filter on it and drive the sthi out of it?

I'd put new fluid in it and drive the sthi out of it. I would be tickled pink if I pulled my pan and it looked like that.

I'd be tempted to pull it apart since its already out. Throw a seal kit in it and go on. I'd rather pull the trans apart since its out than have to pull it apart later if something was going on. Plus if something bad is going on you might save hard parts.

As quick as these things come apart, it would be decent insurance to inspect the innards before race season. But I'd run the chit out of it.

Aren't those reusable gaskets wonderful?

Since you haven't pulled the trans yet, if it was working good I'd button it up and run it.

I think it would be easier for him to replace the rear crankshaft seal if he pulls the trans though.. :D
