I would say the cummings dealer has far more of tie to $$ concerning my engine. And, I bought the diesel so I wouldn't have to work on it as much as maybe a gas truck.
If I was a dealer and knew that pin can cause problems but its $300 bucks to fix it or 5g's to replace the engine...I'd keep my mouth shut and make 3k over the $250 to fix it. Even with the work to tab the dowl pin its still less maintenance than a gasser...

Anyway, Thanks. I hope I haven't jinxed mine. Probably wiggling right now. If it takes out my engine, I will not post about it, but will kick myself forever for not taking advice.

This is why you don't hear to many stories of the pin causing problems....they are kept quiet and not told......some are told but not all.... also there are a lot of people that tabbed the pin and have found a couple case bolts about to fall out also..

Exactly. You, fxr3, are finding out why B-series CTD owners seldom go to Cummins for service work. They want to make $x,xxx or $xx,xxx off of a job, not $xxx. They want to work on a fleet of ISX's, not some 20 year old 6BTA.

That is why I suggested having a private party do the work. There are good people out there. :)

The hardest part of the whole job will either be getting the Harmonic balancer or the fan mount off. Neither of them are complicated, just not easy. The fan hub has one bolt that comes out slow due to it's location, and the balancer is just tough to hold when you break the bolts loose.

There's probably ~10" of space to work when you get the fan and shroud out of the way, and if you feel frisky you can drain the coolant and yank the radiator I wouldn't be surprised if you could stand in there and work on it.

Mine popped out and boned the case, before I bought it. I picked it up with 160,000 and was told that it did that we'll before that mileage. Tab it. Keep a good old motor around.

Actually, CMANN, I am finding that the more posts are better than less posts members(and fallacy of 25 post minimum thing for classifieds). In fact, going forward I'm gonna consider advice from member with fewer posts more likely useful than with member with posts in the thousands. With 3200 posts under your belt, how do you even have time to drive your truck, much less work on it. Your mom, son, daughter could do it after school and still be in for dinner was not that helpful, but was kinda funny, I guess.

And, I was crystal clear about how non-dealer mechanics had disappointed me in past. I'm driving it till pin falls out, doors fall off or whatever's, then get a new one. I've always countered "those engines last forever" yea, too bad the truck wears out. We'll, now I have a race to enjoy-- the dowl pin or the dodge- which one will cause me to send it to junk yard first!

Oh the glorious internet. Someone that does not know me from Adam is personally ticked off at me.

By any rate, sir, I wish your good luck. I regret offering my advice.

Sounds like you just need to sell it and just buy something new with a warranty. You're not going to get far with a 20 yr old vehicle if you're afraid to turn a couple wrenches and learn something.

smh....some people......ask advice get offended when they receive advice.....you already had your mind made up when you asked the question......why bother wasting everyone's time to respond if you aren't going to listen to the advice given...

I have now done three. None had moved, but hidden cover bolts were all loose and I am truly surprised they were even still holding anything down. I'd do it while I was in there getting after those bolts. Then at the top of the housing, stamp, 'TABBED' on it so no future owner has to worry...:)
cheers,

CMANN, I never asked for advice, statistics were what I asked for. So no need to regret giving me advice.

And, as far as selling it, I plan to, once I hit my 25 useful posts. Super cherry w250, extra cab, blue, silver, 115k, no rust, now located in Arkansas. Just drove it here from Cali. 10k firm.

Back in my betting days I would have bet that the only reason for this thread was to accumulate enough posts to list a truck that was bought solely for the purpose to resell and try and make a nice profit.

You got a long ways to go still.

BobS now that you mention it, I'd bet the same. If I were a better.
