Took my stacks out and Wow!

Postby TRACTJDS0428 » Sat Apr 12, 2014 5:03 pm

Ok looking for some info. I had 5" mider cut stacks in my 93 W250. Stock down pipe, then 4" just past the bell housing, 4" elbow to the bottom of the bed and 5" Y out to the stacks. Going to put a different bed on the truck so I took the stacks out to go get a bed and do the swap. So in the mean time I turned the 4" elbow on its side and stuck a chrome turn down out the passenger side just behind the door. I swear I gained a noticeable amount of power! Has anybody else made a change and noticed a huge difference? If my stacks locked up some power, what would a 4" exhaust front to back do? I know a 5" front to back will definitely kill power on a truck less than 500hp. What exhausts are guys running that work well? Anybody dyno tuned to find a good exhaust? Moral of the story, im debating on wether or not to put the stacks back in. Like the quieter ride. Like the idea of being able to hit a carwash if I want to. But really like the look and sound of the stacks.

As far as I know on a turbo charged engine, an exhaust system just gets soot out of the engine bay. 1STGENFARMBOY and PToombs both switch between stacks and a tail pipe, so maybe they'd know. I gauge speed by noise level a lot and in a situation like that, I'd be pushing the pedal harder.

Glad to hear you found a bed!

Well I know the backpressure has an effect on a turbo charged engine. I didnt think it made a difference. Thought bigger was better until a guy I know put a 5" front to back on his racecar hauler. Put the exhaust on during the week between races. He said the truck wouldnt get out of its way. And that was the only change he made. After that he thru injectors and a turbo at it and gained back what he lost. So thats why im looking for some opinions.

As for the bed, I dont have one yet. Got tired of missing out on deals cuz I couldnt drop everything and go get one. So now im ready when I find one. :D

For the record it is getting a 60/68/.70 turbo, hx40 flange 4" downpipe, 5x14 injectors and an Airdog II 165. As soon as its warm enough to put the on.

I think your butt dyno needs to be recalibrated. Ever noticed how most dedicated race trucks and pulling trucks run hood stacks? It's not just to look cool.

I suspect the reason your friend lost power switching exhausts had nothing to do the the diameter of the pipe. My 12 ram has full 5" turbo back and with the tuning I'm running it goes like hell. I am definitely WAY overfuelled with the stock turbo. I'm going to be switching to full 5" on my 93 because that's what the back of my s400 has and I like not bottle necking things like that. The Roo Hunter is getting a big bump in fuelling though so it'll be into big numbers by the time I'm "done"

I understand a hood stack on a puller or race truck. They are running big hp. Just looking for different opinions. Keep em comin!

I believe his truck was somewhat stock. Maybe some minor pump tuning and boost fooler I heard him talk about. It wasnt a 1st gen. Just looking for what seems to be working best on our trucks. Mine wont be stock when Im ready to put an exhaust back on. I dont want to tie up any power if I can help it.

I don't see how you could go wrong with a full 4" system. A VE 5.9L Cummins doesn't spin the RPMs or have the displacement to "need" 5" exhaust.

I also recall that TWorline has 5" exhaust from the transfer case back on his truck. I don't think the 5" would fit past the transfer case for some reason.

When I put on dual 5" exhaust from the case back... I NOTICEABLY lost low end power. This was on a close to stock 1st gen truck. WOT didn't change, but it cut the legs off of it down low.

Thats more or less what the guy I know ran into. Trying to pull a race trailer and lost the grunt.

I put about 40,000 lbs. + behind the old girl today. Cleaned out the cob webs and im definitely leaning towards a full 4" out the back after 3 hrs of droning. Its loud with a load! The stacks were loud too. If I put it all the way out the back is it gonna quiet it down in the cab? Or will I still need slme sound mats? I honestly had the truck a week, with stock exhaust, and then put the stacks on it.

I can't say I've spent a lot of time in a truck with stacks, but in mine with straight 4" exhaust I can tell the difference between exhaust and engine noise. There's a lot more engine noise than exhaust noise. So it may quiet it down some.

It will quiet it down a lot. Only time it really drones in the cab for me is in 4th lugging it a bit. and even then its not terrible but you can hear the exhaust.

Also, My cousins truck had straight piped stacks on his 99 with 50hp injectors and a turbo off a DT engine...I can't remember if it was a 360 or 466 but it took a while for it to spool and once we put a muffler on it, it helped spooling quite a bit.
