Injector pump timing help!!! Bosch ve style

Postby Firstgen11 » Tue Apr 29, 2014 8:35 pm

I just took my old injector pump off with my engine aligned on Tdc judging by eyes when valves stopped moving because my timing pin was broke and I pulled old injector pump off because it needs to be rebuilt and I have a spare engine that runs I did the same eye to valve removal procedure on the new pump and when I installed it I had to move the key on the pump just maybe a 1/16in to line up on gear and I torqued it down and it would start but only when I held the throttle wide open and it didn't even idle it just black smoked like crazy and died I took the timing case cover off and timing marks we're off so I took the gear off the injector pump after I got it to spit fuel out of the fuel line then I rotated my engine to tdc or where the other timing marks would line up with my injector pump gear on e on the gear then I put the injector pump gear on torqued it and still same affect just not as bad please help me idk what to do now it is a bosch ve style injector pump on a 90 dodge w250 non intercooled

are you sure the key way was exactly lined up. I've seen where they were off just a little bit and it mushroomed the key.

He was saying you could have not indexed the key with the key way in the pump gear. That would cause the gear to cut the key in half. I myself have done this twice, it's very easy to do.

Pull the timing plug right out of the engine, it's only held in with a star washer. Then turn it over and center the dimple in the hole the pin goes in. Then you are at TDC and can reset the pump. There is a mark on the front of the pump at about the 5:00 position, this is number 1. Aim the key way on the shaft at this mark and then put the pump in. You should be really close there.

Will the hole pass twice before it's actually on tdc where it needs to perfectly be or as long as the pin is in it's at time?

Also when you said if it's at the 5oclock position should the timing marks on the injector pump gear line up exactly on E or will I need to just install the pump where it's at or find the E and make it like up or just not worry about the timing marks? Explain it from there please I just don't want to have to call a mechanic out to do what I can without the special tools

Cam only turns once to the crank, so anytime the dimple is lined up you're on TDC.
If you line the keyway up at the 5:00 mark and lock the pump down, when you slide the pump in the keyways on the pump and gear should line up real close and the timing will be close enough to run. The "E" mark will be where it has to be. You may have to wiggle the pump back and forth a little to slide the key into the gear. When you get the nut snugged on the pump shaft to hold the gear, loosen the pump lock and then line up the pump to case mark, or advance it the 1/8 inch (whatever you prefer) and tighten the pump down.
You should be good to go at this point.

Still not running right guys I had my gear of my injector pump If I lput it back on and line the e up on the gear with the mark on the cam gear and turn the engine until the pin goes in then put my pump in right? I've tried everything I even went and had my pump set and had my engine on tdc it started but wouldn't rev up just idled rough and wouldn't really go past idle just smokes white and runs really rough anymore ideas?

Sounds like timing is still off. You don't need to set the pump at anything, just line the keyway up and bolt on. As long as the gear locators/markings are lined up correct, everything should work.

Here is crank to cam gear line up

Here is cam to pump gear

Now with that all lined up and the pump on and it still acts up, the internals of the pump may be 180 out. Its easy to do as I've done it before. It'll idle, but pops and smokes as all get out. Long shot, but anything is possible.

Cumminspower59 thanks a bunch and as you said the internals are out 180 degrees if they are how do you fix that problem? That has to be my problem

Got to pull the pump apart, well half of it anyways. It is possible to put the cam plate on 180 degrees out as it appears to go on the same either way, but its just enough to mess the timing up. A little tough and intimidating at first to do it yourself, but pretty easy once you've been in it. Petroleum jelly is your best friend when putting it back together, it'll hold the little parts in place so things stay put.

Can the pump get out 180 degrees on it's own or what cause the internals haven't been touched at all and do you have to fix the internals? You can't fix it by turning to gear 180 degrees?

I must've miss read what you wrote the first time, am I mistook it that you had the pump rebuilt, but I see now that you just swapped the pump off another engine.

Just so it's been established: are you 100% sure the injector high-pressure feedlines are correctly connected and not advanced, or retarded as connected to the IP?
