Bouncing Throttle

Postby 89dudney » Wed May 14, 2014 6:17 am

What would cause the throttle to be "bouncy" in third gear. When I leave it in 2nd and drive with higher RPM's, it doesnt do anything, but when I shift into 3rd it'll bounce. My foot will stay constant on the accelerator pedal, and it will make the truck lurch and jump. When I put it in 4th, it goes away. The bouncing is worse when I downshift to third. Help?

Would that also be part of why it self-revs in second gear and neutral? Hold it quarter throttle and it will go to the moon.

Not questioning what you guys are saying, but wouldn't the RPM level hang up there if it was too much fuel?

Its past that point. If it is self revving, turn it back until it won't do it anymore.

Well the other thing it does is when I rev it clear against the governor spring (366 spring) it pops and almost "cackles" when the rpm level comes back down. What would cause that? same thing?

The "self revving" at quarter throttle is just the nature of the beast of a non-IC pump. My 91 did it, Bill's 600hp 89 did it, my current truck does it now that it has a 114 pump. Get it to the rpm of peak torque, and it takes off. As long as the rpm comes right down you are ok.

Is your throttle bouncing at lighter throttle position in 3rd gear? I.E, when you mash it in 3rd, does it do it? Or is it more an issue when trying to maintain ~25mph in 3rd?
