H1c swap to hx35/40 or he 351

Postby jmd4993 » Tue Jun 24, 2014 7:33 pm

my buddy might have found a cheap i believe 2nd gen turbo for my 92 W250 and i was just wondering i was told change the housing from my stock turbo to the 35/40. i know going smaller is faster spool up. i want it for hauling and towing efficiency. I have a getrag 5peed with a valair dual disc clutch. so i don't accelerate to fast and i want good mpgs and like i said towing efficient.

I heard the best is to get a He351 from a 3rd gen cause i only have a month before i move to montana and id prefer to just be able to bolt on a new turbo and maybe have to mess with the fuel or something.

any info is appreciated thanks

How much/often do you tow?

I have found the he351cw to be a great towing turbo.

I wouldn't even bother swapping housings away from that 35/40... I've personally never seen where a 12cm housing hurt my fuel economy.

It did on my 97. Choked up the motor on the top end. But, drilling out the divider, so you can gate all 6, helps a LOT!

Putting a 60mm comp wheel and non 'gated 14 makes a world of difference! :)

A '97 is a little different animal though (fueling).

A 97 came with a 12 stock...... so what basis were you going off to say that it hurt it.
