4000 RPM Valvetrain

Postby Begle1 » Sat Feb 16, 2008 10:06 am

What should I do to my valve train to make it good for an occasional 4000 RPM?

Just 60# valve springs?

Or hardened keepers, aftermarket pushrods, custom springs and better-than-stock pedestals and rockers?

What's really required? What would be beneficial?

Good keepers and retainers and 60lb springs will reliably support 4000rpm. The rest of that stuff is optional in my opinion.

So what are "good" keepers and retainers?

Does "good" mean new Genuine Cummins stuff, or does it mean aftermarket?

i have seen some cummins retainers pull the keeper through on 4000 and up. i think schieds and haisley and several others sell keppers and reatiners that are made for 5000k and up

I meant aftermarket like what Haisley sells.

Only thing I see on Haisley's website are titanium retainers and hardened keepers for $375.

Them's the ones?
I imagine that those are the same things that 5500 RPM sled pullers run? Was kind of envisioning a mid-level solution.

It's not that big of a job to change out retainers and keepers after I get the head installed, right? Kind of spendy and I probably won't actually have 4000 RPM for at least another year...

$375 is a bargain compared to a dropped valve.

I understand that. It just feels like a waste buying parts good for 6000 RPM and running them at 4000.

I can run up a tab at Haisley's real quick. Keepers and retainers, springs, head gasket and rings...

I'll probably snap a wrist pin at 5500 and put a rod threw the block. But my valve train and head will be okay, and that'll give me the excuse to put together a bottom end with studs, a girdle and low comp pistons. :?

I remember reading someplace that a retainer from a GM Iron Duke and an LS1 spring worked well.

Don't know if it was for a 12v or 24v though

So what RPM level do you start needing bigger springs?

Somebody told me that I'd see benefits of 100# springs at 4000 RPM.

100 springs would be a little stout maybe some #80. 375 is alot cheaper than new valve piston head gasket and time lol.
