The stock fuel filter is kind of small, but otherwise it sounds fine to me.

What about a holley "black" pump? They're supposed to flow like 120gph at 9psi and are not too bad at $159.00? Self-regulated to 14psi so no seal blowing?....

...and I'm only fueling through stock IC injectors with the VE turned up. I thought my piston pump and 3/8" feed from the aux tank was all it would ever need. Maybe it was. When I first put it in it ran alot better, holding at least 10 psi at WOT under sustained load.

Then a few months ago I got to thinking about the filter and decided I needed "better" filtering. By that I meant smaller microns being filtered, not more flow. I ended up getting both with this:

It's a Racor filter head and the filter is rated at 5um nominal. Supposed to be for some sort of IH equipment, probably a combine or something. That's a big improvement over the 10um stock filter rating. I thought it would lose some flow, but actually flows better, I guess due to the much larger size. Now it only sees a 1-2psi drop at WOT, even pulling from the stock 5'16" lines from the stock tank. Shows no drop at all pulling through 3/8" line from the aux tank.

Ace... with that statement you made it quite clear that my 3/8 return lines will suffice...thanks for that info

I figure the filter better be heated...I live in Nebraska..it gets cold here..I often travel long stretches of highway with no humanity for 40 or more miles at a pop...I will make sure this truck is well guarded against gelling. -30 temps and a gelled truck could get life threatening.

as for the holly pump.... I have never had much luck with those electric pumps in the past....might just be bad luck but they seem to not deal well with being submerged.

That big brass cap on top was used to plug the fitment orifice for a heater. I'm not sure why I need a fuel heater. I suppose if I was driving through the middle of nowhere in -30 temps I'd probably have searched out that part and installed it.

I drove the truck the week after putting the new filter on in low single digits a few mornings and had no problems. I think anti-gel fuel adds are the best defense in that area. There are so many places it could back up between the tank pickup and all along the lines wherever it decides to stop flowing I cannot see how a filter heater will prevent that, especially after sitting somewhere for awhile.

But yes like I said, definitely do that anyway!

ps - 3/8 line from aux tank is totally diff than 3/8 from stock pick up that is in a stock (low mount) tank

Holly's are race pumps, that means they don't live on the street. If you want cheap and half reliable get 2 24Valve pumps people have taken off and run them in parallel. or get the carter version with the 3/8npt ports instead of the stock metric thread and use them. I believe they are like $60 each.

So is the fuel heater needed? Does it help the IP live longer? Dodge must have thought it was needed since they put it in there.

from high mount aux tank to the ve its all custom

not only is there no heater...

i run a cooler

dont have enough miles on it yet to know if it affects reliability but my thought is that the ve itself is at 120° or better when the coolant is at 170 so the cooler (more dense) i can get the fuel the better

The stock filter location right next to the block can't be doing much to keep the fuel cool - especially in summer.

glad to hear im not the only one with the cooler fuel thought. i thought about gettin a trans cooler with the little eletric fan on it i was just worried about the flow???? i wonder how much one of those coolers can keep movin through it?
