Here is where the marks lie. Gear key is in the slot. Key may be off to one side of the gear keyway but it is still in there for sure. Is that little bit of advance enough to cause such a difference in engine sound, and so much hazing at idle?

When mine was running like sthi and hazing I had to advance my timing to get it to run smooth.

I'm leaning toward too much timing causing the knock. When you advance timing does it make the engine that much louder under load? The thing is quiet in neutral if I rev if and hold the throttle at an rpm but when you hit the throttle at first to raise the rpm it really barks hard.

And just a further update in case anyone has any ideas other than to retard it more. I just did a cold start. Normally at 30-40 degrees it just starts right up no grids. Now I had to grid and then it was all poppy and not firing on all cylinders. Real real shaky until it stabilized and of course lots of smoke. I think it's got to be too advanced. Any other ideas on why it's such a turd? Holding my foot at a certain rpm smoothed it out and of course made idle stabilize but before it would have just started like a Toyota and was ready to drive.

Like I said when my pump came loose and retarded itself it did just as you were describing. I still think it needs to be advanced.

Crappy video but you can seey pump loose and hear it chugging and running rough when I'm not holding it.

Here's a thought that just occurred to me. Could the gear in the case turn in any way once the pump has been removed? I took the gear puller off the gear after pulling the pump so now I am wondering if it could have slipped a tooth during reinstall or is the gear pretty tight in there?

Don't think it is possible for the gear to turn in the case. Pretty sure some have tried with out success.

I tried to make my pump gear advance one tooth,I could not make it do it. Of course I didn't force it or anything.

I tried to turn mine once to test it and couldn't move it. Some people have said theirs jumped when the turned the engine over with the pump out so it may be possible.

So they say. The last time I had issues getting the keyway lined up.... my gear was jumping and bouncing all over the place, it never skipped.

I was able to spin my gear 180* without taking the timing cover off, through the IP hole.
Took a while to figure out how to do it though. I don't think it'd be possible to accidentally turn it.

Sorry for the late update. Had to rent a truck for my trip but got the old 12V running right when I got back. Thanks for everyone's help.
