2001 24v

Picked this truck up out in western CO after I sold my 04.5. Got really tired of the common rail woes.... Drove it back to MN praying the VP wouldn't die

Truck was 1 owner, has the NV5600, dealer installed exhaust brake, airbags, flatbed, and best of all rust free. Seemed to be well taken care of, it is very tight.

Blew a tire near Idaho springs, stopped in Denver and bought the set of 35s. They rub rear of fenders pretty bad. Longer control arms eventually.

I won't be starting this project for a while but I am either going VE or Pee pump.

Any opinions on VE VS P? I like the idea of not having to buy conversion lines, seems I can adapt the VE.

I haven't driven a hopped up p pump truck, so I have no idea how they feel. I know an all stock one is miserably slow....

Hp goal maybe 500. Will the 24v prove to be easier to get there vs the 12v with a VE?

Truck will be a summer DD, workhorse.

Well.......having a ve 24v,I'd vote ppump for power in the range your talking. The ve would require some massive extra work to make that power. That's not conjecture.....that's fact.

For every day driving,reliability,decent power,and mileage retention I'd say ve. Especially if your going to work it.

It may just come down to whichever engine I come across for a decent dollar first. Have a friend with a few fedex trucks I may get a hold of. Ppump engines.

Is a ppump still street friendly at 500?

If you got the air down low, I'm pretty sure yes.

A lot of it depends on your delivery valves, and timing level. Ron Allen had a p pump 6.7 at a little over 1200whp that was street friendly.

I am also thinking about just changing out the complete engine for a 12v.

Don't know about the ppump stuff.....but mine don't leak because they're the factory cummins lines adapted to the ve pump. No issues what so ever

I don't know if there's any great explanation to the why would you other than the cool factor and using what you have that cost the least amount of coin.
I did it for no other reason than to just do it. Plus the mileage of my half ton and this cummins is unbelievable (25/26 depending on driver foot).

The 24v is capable of moving more air,and more fuel.....so in my minds eye I believe it'll make more power. Then again.....I don't do it for a living,nor am I a forum commando or keyboard hero.

Driveability is a concern also, this VP with a smarty s03 is touchy. Especially with tq management turned up.

I don't want my new setup to act like that.

I know the VE is pretty dang driveable - but is there a general hp # at which it's not?

Ppump sounds like 450+ gets a bit unruly.

Not in my experience,mostly because of the timing advance capability. You can go too far with your base timing and make it rattle hard and that throws it off some. M&H sells a spacer to give the advance piston more stroke and let's the pump advance the timing a little more.
As with any diesel it's all got to do with the amount of fuel/amount of air/and how much timing you can get. Ppumps are stuck with whatever they have once someone sets it and nothing will change that,and it's a drawback. It doesn't change with rpm/load.....nothing.
If you want high side power,you want a lot of timing and you'll be left with a hot smoking turd every time you leave a light and you won't work it without killing it......however slowly that might be.
With a ve you can have an easy crank,good manners,and a relatively clean truck that you can work......you just won't have the power goal. 350/400 easy with the right turbo/injector combo and can still use it as a freakin truck.....not just truck slut bait lol.......male truck slut bait

BC (the site mod) runs a modded 12v that puts down close to your goal. You might look around for how his truck is set up. Also rccummins (Eric Gilbert) on here ,has the hungry diesel website, has a 24v ve motor in it. I believe it's healthy as well.

Okay my honest opinion is leave the Vp44 alone. Supply good fuel flow to it and they do fine. I'm one of the few that love the vp44d though. I prefer them over the Ve but that's just me. I don't care for the p pump at all unless it's a competition truck.

I'd run the VP till it acted up as well. Imo, vp 24 valves are the best sounding cummins. P pump can do a measly 500 with just 18 degrees timing, plenty streetable. More streetable than a 500 hp ve. (No 12 mm ve has dynoed quite 500 to date) That said I would rather have a mildly modified 420-440 hp ve than a 500 hp p pump. Overall broader powerband ( unless you HAVE to spin it to 4k rpm) and better manners and mileage. Much less power to turn the little ve compared to p pump. So unless you have the p pump already, or you decide you want more than 450-500 hp down the road, the ve would be a better replacement for a vp, in my opinion.
