Valve adjustment, power changes

Postby garywj » Wed Feb 06, 2008 8:54 pm

Thanks for the info on the valve adjustment. My truck has 200,025 miles on it and I wonder if it has ever been adjusted before. After adjusting the valves, I turned the fuel screw up about a turn and a half. WOW!!! It runs way better now. More power, sooner. It seems to idle a little fast now, but I can see the power potential these engines have. My question is, leaving everything else stock. Would a smaller turbo housing be of any benefit? Also, would replacing my stock muffler with strait pipe help? Thanks for all your help! :)

Going to a 16cm housing from the 21cm it came with would be a good inprovement.

I didn't see any gains when I droped the muffler on the stock 3" system. All it did was add noise.

Now going to a 4" system is another matter. It gives better spool up on the turbo and lower EGT's. That is another good upgrade.

droppin the muffler may not add any power but it will drop the egt a little. if your an auto the 16cm will be ok but if your a manual then you will get better results out of the 14cm

I liked the 16 out of all of them that I have run (12-21), and I have had them all at one point or another. The 14 was just a little too restrictive- going to a ported 18 didnt change EGT at all, just dropped peak boost about 3-4psi.

I have had some trucks where removing the muffler seemed to help; others, not so much. It wont hurt anything. Going to a 4" system will help EGTs if you throw too much fuel at it- good for about 100deg reduction in peak EGt.

Check Desert Valley auto parts. They sometimes have some nice ones.

I have a rusty 74 that may get a 360 for commuting.
