hey guys i am considering buying a 91 dodge diesel. a buddy of mine who owns a 24v always said i should get the 94 and up 12v. my question is this, is the pump the only MAJOR differnce between the earlier and later 12v?
i know injectors and ic where diff. thanks for the help

Aside from the 12V part, just about everything is different. That's why the line between 1st gen/2nd gen is between '93/'94.

are their things that make the 2nd gen more desirable over a 1st gen? i just don't know much about the earlier motors

yes the second gens are more desierable , because the ppumps can make alot more HP, and also if your going twins they have that extra drain for the bottom turbo (witch i realy wish i had), pistons are a bit diffrent, but i think other then that there mostly the same

The only thing a 2nd Gen. has over a 1st Gen. is the P7100 INLINE injector-pump.


The rest of any of the later trucks is consumer-minded tin-can junk.

The 1st Gen.s are built more like a truck, with genuine old-school bullet-proof running-gear.



Just compare otherwise identical trucks, 1st and 2nd Gen., at auction, and see which people are willing to pay for; the 1st Gen. will outsell the later truck every time.

Bradshaw, another thing to consider is what do you want to do with the truck? From my experience, the second gens have a lot, A LOT more aftermarket support. From engine parts all over the internet to LMCTruck.com for any replacement interior or body parts. However, if you are interested in something different, and are willing to head down a road less traveled, then go with a first gen. There are parts for it, but they are harder to find, but places like 1stgen.org are there to help you out with whatever you need.

my biggest draw to the truck is the motor. i love the diesel. i do want to be able to turn it up but from what i have read the 1st gen has lots of potential. is 350 hp a resonable goal on a modest budget?

From what I see, they do, at least around my neck of the woods.

That is, of course, providing that both trucks are in similar condition and similar mileage.

Some have, but the VE-pump will do all anyone needs.

Id check to see if that truck is intercooled. I bought a nonintercooled auto 91....Ive put $3000 just in intercoolering it and changing it to o/d manual.

i havent had a chance to check. but im going to. it sounds like i should hold out for an intercooled truck
