alternator wireing Q? HELP ME

Postby krazykarl454 » Tue May 06, 2008 7:49 pm

ok guys my trucks coming along pretty good, but i went to wire u pthe alternator, and i couldn't get it to produce voltage. i know on a GM alt. you just have to energize the exciter wire, which was the brown wire. now on the back of the dodge alt. theres a blue and green wire besides the heavy wire that runnes to the batt., so is one of those the exciter? is one a tach hook-up? and if there is an exciter wire, should i ground it or runnin it to a +12v ignition source?

i really need sum help, so close to her being road worthy, thanks

those are field wires. the regulator on the truck (either external or in the pcm depending on year) supplies a varialbe ground signal to one of the field wires and the other is straight to ground (although it grounds through the regulator case). if you supply a solid ground signal to both wires the alt will go to full charge.

your either gonna have to wire in an external mopar style regulator (super easy to do and the regulator and pigtail can be removed from the local pik-a-part from any post 71 mopar product for less than $15) or go to a internal regulated alternator such as the leece-neville 111-555. that conversion has been covered on dtr and tdr. its pretty easy to do and i've been happy with mine. hardest part was finding a pulley. either way you'll have it working in a day.

actually i screwed that one up :( . after thinking about it, then looking at my truck, then checking online the center pole on the regulator gets 12 volts supplied to it in series with the alternator. the other goes to the alternator and supplies the ground. i was correct that the regulator pulses ground signal.

i'm better at doing things than explaining them.

ok. so i definetly need to get an external voltage regulator right? that unit on the back of the alt. isn't a voltage reg i guess, because it kinda sounds like the one u guys described, it has a ground comin out of it, the 2 smaller gauge wires, n the hot lead for the batt. and maybe the brushes took a crap as well, mite try out a fresh alt.. but if it is a voltage reg on the back would i just hook one wire up to an igniton source and one to a ground? thanks again guys
